Personal Narrative: The Fear Of Surgery

Improved Essays
Surgery is a fear of many. Tons of people have surgery every day, and they make it out just fine. Sometimes, it does not end so well. The fear of not waking up after you are put under is terrifying, and it is actually enough to keep some people from getting the surgery that they need. My mom is one of those people that came out perfectly. In September of 2014, my mom started having pain in her neck and shoulder. She thought that it was just from stress, and it would go away with time. She was wrong, but she was too stubborn to do anything about it for a couple of months. She tried using heating pads and sleeping in a different position, but nothing worked. It had gotten so bad that her whole arm would go numb from the pain in her neck …show more content…
She told him what was happening, and they sent her to a specialist. They took x-rays and saw that it was more than they thought. There was some sort of problem that needed surgery to be fixed. They talked about the surgery and tried to set the date. The issue was that her schedule is very busy with work, so she could not just pick a date. After the surgery she had to stay home for at least two weeks just to ensure that she would not injure it again, so she had to pick the times far in advance because she was opening new stores at the …show more content…
I brought Bryanna Hybert and Adriana Wagenveld with me because we all wanted to hang out anyway. We helped her put the correct number of movie cases on the shelves, and we threw away the extra boxes. It was actually fun, and it felt good to help my mom. She did not have to do the work either way because that is not her job, so we were just helping the manager of that store. The reason my mom needed us to go to work with her in the first place is because she needed someone to drive her because she could not drive with her neck brace yet. In the end, she healed up perfectly, and she is back to a normal life. There are some things that she still can not do, like ride roller coasters or lift heavy things, but she is doing much better than she was when the surgery first happened. She is much happier now that she is not in pain all the time anymore. She still gets some pain, but that is normal because this surgery takes so long to completely recover from. She is doing remarkably well, and she has done well throughout the whole process. Surgery is something that can be scary, especially if it is an obscure procedure, but you do not need to be afraid. Doctors have their degrees in the medical field, so they know what they are doing. If you ever feel uncomfortable with a doctor doing your procedure then you should find a new doctor. Even if it is a small problem, you never know when the surgery you need could end up saving your

When he realized how serious his condition was, he told us that he was willing to undergo the surgery. When pressed for a reason, he replied “I saw you guys, and I knew that I didn’t want to put all of you through all the sadness that would come with seeing my health drop”. His decision, to see all of his family and friends happy, as opposed to the worried looks everyone often wore, caused him to overlook his own personal beliefs and make the decision that might give us a reason to smile. This decision, had it been approved, would have been dangerous for him, and may have caused more problems, but he saw it as a way to start over and make everyone happy.
