Diversity is a well-known word, for it is understood that diversity means “a range of different things” or a variety. Furthermore, it is seen everywhere, every day, and in every way. However, despite that, it is my opinion that the word diversity goes far beyond the literal definition. Ordinarily, there is surface level diversity, different hair color or different shoe size, but then there is the kind of diversity where life is so exceptionally different from another that some do not even know that this kind of life exists. This kind of diversity, the one that goes far deeper than merely surface level, is what studying the culture stories exposed me to. It is my opinion that in studying these different creation stories, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity all around me and made plans to make sure that I never forget the true uniqueness of life.
The first example I encountered while studying the creation stories was during the TED talk given by the photographer Jimmy Nelson. Towards the end of his talk, Jimmy brought up a picture of two females dressed in fur-lined winter coats; he then told the audience that the two people in the picture belonged to the Chukchis, a tribe of around 40 people that live in Chukotka, Siberia. Not only did this in depth study awaken a desire within me to travel the world, but it also taught me the value of human life in all its sacredness. I plan on reaching out to those who are different from others so that I can learn more about them and what part they contribute to our diversity. I plan to start acknowledging diversity each and every day so that I may never forget what truly allows the world to go round.
