Support Groups The high rate of substance use disorders (SUD) in the Appalachian and Southern regions of the United States may be attributed to more than socioeconomic and family dynamics. One important factor to consider is that these areas are extremely rural. There are few treatment centers and support groups available, most of which are in heavily populated cities that are too far away for most abusers seeking help. The rural area where this writer lives have few resources available that are 15-30 miles away. Here is a list of the nearest support groups:

In this area, there is not support through Rational Recovery, SMART, SOS, WFS, MM, or LifeRing. For those interested in the traditional support groups, this area would benefit greatly by an increase in support groups conveniently located in the small towns. Personally, this writer feels that the secular organizations do not provide evidence of success without the inclusion of the 12-steps. If she were to recommend a secular organization, it would most likely be the SMART support group since it is somewhat effective. The 12-Step program had been established on Christian principles. Dr. Bob stated in his book, “Cured,” “But we [Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob] were convinced that the answer to our problems was in the Good Book [the Bible]. To some of us older ones, the parts we found absolutely essential were the Sermon on the Mount, the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, and the Book of James.” Everyone needs to come to the realization that he/she are not the “be all to end all”, that we all need a Savior, that we should surrender to Christ, and accept the free gift of
