This is the stage where members are learning how to work together as a team. I like to refer to this as the "getting to know you" stage. Typically, in the forming stage members are seen as being courteous and polite. There is little to no arguments or disagreements during this stage. The main activity during forming is establishing the purpose of the group, group rules, and roles. At times the group leaders is seen and/or chosen.
During the first meeting the group establishes that their purpose is to provide resources to assist students in reducing stress, related to preparation for comprehensive exams. We were able to establish the group norms, which are also known to be group rules. Our rules included being respectful to one another at all times, Being willing to participate with a team-like spirit, keep each other up to date on group meetings if someone misses a session, put forth effort when finding resources to assist the group in their overall goal, and respecting each members' right to privacy. Also, during the first meeting the eldest member took the role as group leader. However, every member served an important part in assisting each other with reducing stress for the comprehensive
