Food Feinability In Uganda

Over the past few decades, food availability in Uganda shows increasing trends. During 2009-13, average protein intake was 51 gram/person/day that is considerably high than previous years. Supply of protein from animal sources is still low, only 12 gram/person/day, and almost consistent over the period of time. The plausible reason is low production of meat sources, e.g., cattle, chicken. Though Uganda produces a lot of fish but intended for export which is also needed to import cereals from other countries. On an average, 10% of total cereal demand meets through import. Most of the household suffers from low food diversity, and around 45% of their energy comes from cereals, roots and tubers. It means that they eat very low amount of fat, protein …show more content…
In 2014, percentage of children under 5 years of age who are underweight, stunned and wasting were 14.1%, 33.7% 4.8%, respectively. According to the FAOSTAT (2016), all these indicators is in decreasing trends. Different development including social, economic and other programs surely helped to lowering these indicators. Good governance is an also crucial component to ensure universal food security of any country. Governance indicators measure the extent to which a government can develop and implementing effective policy, including policies designed to advance the green economy. Around 17% of household in rural areas have borderline food consumption whereas urban areas consist only 10%. Moreover, 43% of rural household have low dietary diversity and depends mostly on staple foods. On the contrary, only 22% of urban household have low dietary diversity. The reasons are obvious and plausible. Majority of the rich people lives in urban areas, especially employed in industrial and service sectors where average salaries are predominantly high.
