The atmosphere presses down on the earth an average of about 14.7 pounds of weight on every square inch it touches. Most people’s shoulders have an area of 12 square inches. So overall, the weight pressing on your shoulders is equaled out to be 176 pounds! This is called atmosphere pressure. Now it certainly doesn’t feel like there is 176 pounds pressing on me all day long, but there is an equal pressure pushing on me from all sides, including from within. In this experiment, we will demonstrate the fact that the atmosphere actually does exert pressure on everything it touches.

When steam vigorously streamed out of the cans, it was a sign that the water was boiling. Each bowl was filled half up with icy water, while the cans were heating up. When the water began to boil, the tongs were used to grab a can and place it up right into the water. Then the other can was picked up by the tongs and placed upside-down into the water. When the first can was put in the water right side up, the ice in the bowl began to melt, and the can flopped over to the side so it had to be held up with the tongs, but other than that, nothing much happened.
