I believe my passion for social justice and love of problem-solving will allow me to be successful within the field of sociology, and I hope to help others in need by advocating for the rights of those incarcerated. I plan to use my degree to recognize patterns in crime trends and consult local police departments on how to prevent crime in its early stages. I believe a lot of crimes are preventable if programs are put in place to make the community safer.

As part of a class assignment, I was given the opportunity to create my own project about anything that intrigued me. So, I decided to write letters to female inmates on death row. I wanted to learn more about the realities of living out a death sentence in America’s prison system. I received seven letters back, and I realized that I wanted to work to improve our society’s social problems. In ten years, I hope to be living out that dream by applying my sociology degree to study criminal behavior and implement more projects like my letters to death row inmates. I believe I am deserving of this scholarship because I will be using the money to eventually give back to my community and communities all around the …show more content…
However, USF has awarded me $15,600 in grant money. I am very grateful to USF for the grant, but it still does not come close to what I need in order to attend. My goal is to take out as little student loans as possible in order to start out with as little debt as possible. Taking out enough loans to cover USF’s cost of attendance would put me in a lot of debt, which is not an ideal way to start my life on my own.

11. How much financial assistance will you be receiving from your family? My family’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is $19,586 according to FAFSA. After taking out both the grant awarded to me by USF and my family’s EFC from the overall cost of attendance, I would still need to come up with $28,698. I realize this sum is large, but I hope by working hard my freshman year I will be able to receive a merit scholarship from USF for sophomore year. USF is my dream school, so I really hope I will be able to make it work.

Catherine Portacio Introduction to Constitutional Law Dr. Beahm In the United States alone there are just about 2 million people currently incarcerated; that is more than 20 percent of the entire global imprisoned population. Angela Y. Davis is a professor of history of consciousness at the University of California who shows, in her book, Are Prisons Obsolete?, how alarming the US prison system situation isn’t as old as one average individual may think. Just about 30 years ago the entire prison population stood nearly at 200,000 people in the US; that is a tenfold hurdle in just one generation. Davis started off by explaining the drastic change in the number of prisons built in California; 3 prisons were built between 1852 and 1952; from 1984 to the present, over 80 facilities were constructed which now house about 160,000 people.…

Stevenson’s work has helped many inmates, wrongfully accused or wrongly sentenced, and family of inmates and changed the way of thinking when it comes to racial and poverty divides into what should be the legal justice system. His work has inspired me and what I assume many others. But Stevenson didn’t get to inspire many or even help many without acquiring the educational means to do so. When faced with the difficult reality of mass incarceration, and the high rates of women of color incarcerated in our federal prison system, we are often left wondering what we as mere college students can do. While our position against this unjust reality seems very small, one of the things we can do is provide educational resources to women of color in prison by donating our old books – whether these be our old college textbooks or any. There is very strong evidence out there that suggests that prisoners that are allowed access to education resources while in prison are more likely to thrive once released, and their chance of being re-incarcerated is lowered. In an interview with NPR following the Obama administration’s step toward expanding access of the Pell grant to adult prisoners, Lois Davis of the RAND corporation (a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges) said that education is the centerpiece of an effective re-entry into society, and a better way to spend our tax dollars: “Education is a relatively low-cost program you can provide to inmates. But, when you look simply at direct…
