7. Proposed field of study/vocation/occupation My dream is to attend the University of San Francisco and major in sociology with a minor in criminal justice studies. I believe my passion for social justice and love of problem-solving will allow me to be successful within the field of sociology, and I hope to help others in need by advocating for the rights of those incarcerated. I plan to use my degree to recognize patterns in crime trends and consult local police departments on how to prevent crime in its early stages. I believe a lot of crimes are preventable if programs are put in place to make the community safer.

As part of a class assignment, I was given the opportunity to create my own project about anything that intrigued me. So, I decided to write letters to female inmates on death row. I wanted to learn more about the realities of living out a death sentence in America’s prison system. However, USF has awarded me $15,600 in grant money. I am very grateful to USF for the grant, but it still does not come close to what I need in order to attend. My goal is to take out as little student loans as possible in order to start out with as little debt as possible. Taking out enough loans to cover USF’s cost of attendance would put me in a lot of debt, which is not an ideal way to start my life on my own.
11. How much financial assistance will you be receiving from your family? My family’s Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is $19,586 according to FAFSA. After taking out both the grant awarded to me by USF and my family’s EFC from the overall cost of attendance, I would still need to come up with $28,698. I realize this sum is large, but I hope by working hard my freshman year I will be able to receive a merit scholarship from USF for sophomore year. USF is my dream school, so I really hope I will be able to make it work.
