Throughout the series, Michael demonstrates a complete lack of respect and appreciation for Toby who is the office’s human resource representative. In Carell and Kwapis’s (2006) episode Michael Scott is providing Toby with “constructive criticism” in front of all of the employees in the office; where he tells him that he “hates so much about the things that he chooses to be.” Obviously, Michael was not trying to be constructive as opposed to hateful, but the situation is a good example of how not to handle that type of situation. According to Woodbury, Cohen, and Zayszly (2001), a counselling session should “identify the problem, ask for the employee’s view, seek the employee’s ideas on improvement with your input, agree on a plan and write it down, and follow up and review the results (pg. 30). Clearly, Michael made an inappropriate remark to Toby in front of everyone, but it really was not even a counseling session. Toby is destined to fail in any interaction with Michael because he voices his objection to Michael in a logical way that makes Michael feel that he is threatening to change his office culture. Another example of Michael Scott’s poor supervisory skills is demonstrated in Lieberstein and Daniels’s (2006) episode where Dwight attempts to steal Michael’s job by speaking with Jan (Michael’s boss) behind his back after lying to him about getting an emergency crown put in. When she received her first position as a supervisor there was no perspective of being a leader, but to only supervise staff and make sure the work is completed. With limited guidance into the position, all she could think about is if she was willing to do a given task and follow policy then her team will be more willing to do the same. Leading by example is well stated in a web article by Dharmesh Shah (Shah, 2014, para 7): The best way to earn respect, to earn trust, and to earn the right to lead others is to lead not by word but by example. When I know you truly believe what you say – because your actions support what you say – then I will start to trust you.…

Comparing and contrasting the views expressed by Carisa and me in this week's discussion board will be the topic of this post. Carisa chose a quote by John D. A supervisor’s conflict style tells a lot about an individual’s personality and leadership style. Managing conflict, rather it be internal or external, is an important aspect of day-to-day functions for humans (Gross, 2010). Different styles can even impact the health of an individual. Summary of Workshop Our workshop on It’s Okay to Be the Boss by Bruce Tulgan, contained four scenarios concerning tardiness at work, overwhelming deadlines, slacking off on the job, and being overloaded with work assignment tasks. One scenario was acted out for each group of two “managers” for a total of four sets of managers. The scenarios allowed the “managers” to touch on any solution presented in the book in order to reach the best resolutions to handle problematic situations with employees. Settings like these were used to demonstrate how learning to solve one small performance problem can diffuse mediocrity and better managing people before they get out of hand in the workplace.…

The Role of the Police Supervisor As a new supervisor assigned to patrol, it is essential to have some basic leadership tools in ones “tool box” to ensure that you are successful. For the basic police officer we all attend the police academy and are influenced by the instructors assigned there. These instructors are usually seasoned officers who become our role models who we hope to emulate someday. Our first impression of the police supervisors are made here. Once the academy is completed, we are then indoctrinated in our agencies policies and procedures.…

Classification of Bosses/Supervisors Almost everyone that has worked for a living has one distinct variable in common. That variable is a boss or supervisor. I use the term variable because bosses have many different strategies and personalities. A key component to getting along with the person in charge is to be reliable, accurate, and someone who the boss knows he or she can go to in order to get the job done. My understanding of this role centered on the idea that as a supervisee, I would go to my supervisor and discuss a case. Sometimes, I would see my supervisors jot down notes, other times they would merely listen to the case being presented. There was never a constant in the way that any two supervisors would approach the supervisory role.…
