My personal experience with being promoted from within was positive because I had an experienced manager who helped walk me through the promotion and into the new position. He helped me understand the various responsibilities and job requirements before I accepted the position. I was given opportunities to lead small groups and projects leading up to my promotion. My promotion was announced well in advance of responsibilities being turned over to me. I was placed with an experienced manager for a while which accomplished two things. First, it separated me from my peers for a time which helped demonstrate to me and them that things were changing. Second, it gave me some hands on training with an experienced supervisor. I was given some established measuring and tracking tools to help me evaluate my team’s performance. I was also given several opportunities to take training courses during my first year in leadership. Perhaps the most important thing for me was my having a mentor to help me understand the impact my promotion would have on my relationships with my peers.
