With the trials soon began to overwhelm their justice system. Tituba 's confession that the devil approached her and several other witches brought over hysteria into the town, followed by a stream of accusations. Dozens of people brought in for questioning including children as young as four years old, coincidentally Sarah Good 's four year old daughter Dorothy, was one of the accused brought in for questioning. The villagers were very frightened of being wrongly accused like any woman and children were but of also getting bewitched themselves like they thought they had the power to do so. They feared of being approached by the devil also spirits which some claimed. Men who were less likely to be accused also feared woman in general due most accusations against them. The people starting doubting each other and their friendships. Due to all the mistrust in the village the people started having more daily challenges in their way of living since they as a community helped each other out and now started to turn on each other. The residents started to be cruel and ignorant instead of sharing resources and caring for their children. As the mass hysteria spread they then had to support themselves, making their own clothes, planting vegetables, and raising meat even though they weren 't equipped for some of the task since they usually would trade goods with neighbors. The Salem witch trials that occurred in the 17th century was greatly influenced by the church which controlled the government and the hysteria that mass spread threw England to the town of Salem commonly known as Massachusetts.
