The Supernatural in Macbeth
The play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare and was published in 1606. The witches tell Macbeth his faith. Macbeth and lady Macbeth come up with a plan to kill king Duncan so he can be kind but not only do they kill Duncan but many other characters in the story too all because of the witches . According to the oxford dictionaries the definition of supernatural is “manifestations or events considered to be of supernatural origin, such as ghosts”. When a person hears the word supernatural they usually think something bad is going to happen, but in Macbeth, Shakespeare just doesn’t use the supernatural for bad but for good as well. They greet him with three titles, ‘Thane of Glamis,’ ‘Thane of Cawdor.’ and king hereafter. ‘The last two titles are used as foreshadowing for things to come. Macbeth himself sees them, but as prophecies that might come true the tittle of thane of thane of Cawdor foreshadows a tittle that is soon announced to him in scene four due to the execution of Cawdor. (para. 6)
The problems in the story all have to do something with the supernatural. For example, when Macbeth sees Banquo as a ghost, whether it's really was a ghost or just his conscience. The others think he's going crazy and they suspect him to killing king Duncan just so he can have money and power. That's when the readers start figuring out that something is going to happen and the problems in the story start developing.
Macbeth thought he was going to be wealthy and was going to have power and It can be said that supernatural can have positive and negative effects on people. Sasha Jox said, “The prophecies at the beginning of the play led him to his success, and those at the end led him to his death”. (para5).
In the beginning Macbeth was loyal and the king wouldn’t even think that he would betray him. The witches appear and they lead him to money and power then towards the end the apparitions appear and lead Macbeth to death, lady Macbeth to suicide and other characters got killed as
