“Superman and Me”, by Sherman Alexie, is a brilliant autobiography. The essay is about how Alexie learned to read from a Superman comic book at the young age of three. He was a Spokane Indian boy living with his family on the Spokane Indian reservation in Washington state. The essay consists of the hardship that Indian people went through and how they lived. Not only how all the Indians in his area lived but especially his own family. His family was poor, but his parents always seemed to have a minimum wage job which made them middle class Indians. He was bound to live in poverty like the rest. His father was fond of books, he had them everywhere. He was an enthusiastic reader. His father had books of all kinds scattered all over the humble home they had. And for that reason since he loved his father with an extreme devotion, he decided to love books. He refused to fail, he was smart, he was arrogant, and most of all lucky. He talks about how he is surprised he became a writer. He speaks of how he visits schools and teaches creative writing to Indian boys, and how some of the boys are really eager to see him while others gave up with their education. I learned how to read at the age of five. Not only could I read at five but I could also read spanish. I couldn't really understand the words or say them correctly all the time but I had a grasp of the languages. I would use context clues so to say because the books had pictures. I would open the books and there would be pictures under the text, so by that I say that it helped me a lot to understand. Alexie also did that. According to the essay, Alexie says, “...
