Superman And Me Rhetorical Analysis

Alexie’s story, Superman and Me was extremely powerful and motivating. The purpose of his essay was to convince and encourage readers to never stop learning, and to always read. He used his own personal struggles to deliver a message. I never knew that school life on a reservation was that unpleasant. I had the assumption that schools on reservations were far more advanced than schools off the reservation. I was also surprised when he talked about how Indian students were not expected to succeed. The goal of every teacher no matter what class, race, age, or gender you teach, should be to guide and provide tools for students to become intelligent and successful members of society. They should not be teaching students to expect failure. I feel

    1. The first two paragraphs contain a very straightforward tone because the man is simply stating that society sees him as invisible due to the color of his skin. This can be seen as straightforward because he is merely acknowledging how he has been overlooked by white people in society solely due to his skin tone over the course of his life. 2. Throughout his encounter with the Blonde man the black man thought he had already know that he was black, which is why he lashed out at the blonde man due to assuming the incident was instigated by ethnicity; however, the black man later understands that the blonde man never realized he was black thus finding the situation ironic, for how could a white man be attacked by someone “invisible”.…

In the stories “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, and “The Struggle to be an All American Girl” by Elizabeth Wong, and the poem “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” by Louise Erdrich, each of the writers focus on the positive and negative aspects of education. While part of the setting for Louise Erdrich’s poem and Elizabeth Wong’s story take place inside an actual school, the setting for Toni Cade Bambara’s story doesn’t take place inside a school; however, for all three stories, the characters in them are taught very important lessons. When I think about the three readings it reminds me that we have important lessons in our life that we have to learn from. Everyone has a lesson they have to learn in life no matter what it is…

The failure of public schooling in America is an ongoing controversy among teachers, parents, and administrators across the nation. David Guggenheim exemplifies the concern of America’s failing education system in his eye-opening documentary, Waiting For Superman. The film covers topics such as socioeconomic background, school funding, charter schools, and teacher tenure, all of which are contributing factors to the plummeting education system. Focusing in on teacher performance, teacher tenure is an agreement under union contract that secures a teacher’s job for life after meeting specific expectations for an allotted amount of time. The documentary details how quickly teachers can qualify for tenure, the inability to reprimand low performing teachers under tenure policy, and how negligent teachers protected by tenure can negatively affect an educational institution.…

Many of the stories were about transition between childhood and adulthood and were relatable because I am also in that transition. At the beginning of my freshman year, I created a guiding question that will follow me throughout my four year of college. My question, “What is the relationship between personality and behavior?” relates to the class because I gained insight into other characters’ transitions from childhood to adulthood, which allowed me to grow my view on life.…

Three Cups of Fiction: The Unethical Use of the Three Modes of Persuasion Journalism is a powerful outlet in that every statement has its consequences. Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin prove this by suffering greatly (theres negative consequences) from their untruthful “journalism”. These authors dishonestly used rhetoric to persuade their readers of an uplifting story about a man’s humanitarian mission in Pakistan to public as nonfiction, which brought him enormous success and Mortensen public attention. However, it has been revealed by the journalist Jon Krakauer in his publication Three Cups of Deceit, that the book Mortenson and Relin conceived is just a “compelling creation myth” (Krakauer 6).…

When Alexie chose to include the detail of how his father was “one of the few Indians who went to Catholic school on purpose,” it raises the question that if his father’s passion for reading and learning was uncommon, how much was literature valued on the reservation? It is evident through this unpromising detail that literacy on the reservation was not valued. Alexie’s father was one of the few on the reservation who realised he must leave the reservation in order to succeed in life. His father had an obsession with books that he passed along to Alexie through his incorporation of literature in everyday life. Alexie chose to include this in order to convey how reading was non-discriminatory and was an escape from pain.…
