In the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, and the story, ¨The Wise Old Woman,¨ by Yoshiko Uchida, the elders are treated significantly different. In the book, The Giver, the elders are treated with more respect, when meanwhile, in the story, ¨The Wise Old Woman,¨ the elders are treated like they don´t even exist. The quote in, The Giver, says, “It was a secret selection, made by the leaders of the community, the Committee of Elders, who took the responsibility so seriously that there were never even any jokes made about Assignments,”(15). The previos quote clearly states that the elders were so important that they were never even joked about.
