Breaking Down the Stereotype Alexie, author of “Superman and Me”, uses the trope analogy to compare Superman breaking down a door to breaking indian stereotypes through education. Alexie states that as a child he read Grapes of Wrath while other children were reading Dick and Jane (216). While his reading skills were impressive because he was an Indian child these talents were ignored. Alexie argues that Indian children were held to oppressive stereotypes were they are “expected to fail in the non-Indian world” (217). Yet by reading, Alexie was able to disprove these clichés by learning to read. He read “Superman is breaking down the door… I am breaking down the door” (216).
