Superheroes: An Unauthorized Exploration

Look, up there in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it’s… a superhero who is totally capable of being psychoanalyzed! What many people fail to realize is that, despite their powers, superheros and villians are capable of human emotions and traits. I’m sure that we also might question why superheroes/villains turn out the way they do. The Psychology of Superheroes: An Unauthorized Exploration gives major insight to why and how superheroes came to be what they have become. To be quite honest, you might not see yourself much different than these heroes as you thought. An interesting point brought up was that of course, most superheroes have the ability to fly, but so do we on a jet plane. Also, the fact that superheroes have to decide to make “moral” choices or not just like we do links the connection between superheroes and humans. This article is the most interesting to me because I never considered humans to be on the same level as superheroes. After reading it , however, i am now aware of a whole bunch of similarities and am able to see the more human side of heroes as well as the more hero side of humans. “Perhaps our need to be superheroes is a goal that we human beings can aim at collectively rather than individually” (115) is a quote that really stood out to me while reading this book. I liked this quote so much because it’s simply the truth. The power in numbers is capable of doing heroic actions as we’ve seen many times before. The quote kind of made me put into perspective what we define as being a hero and how we can achieve that. I relate to it because I know that I would not have been able to get through some tough times without others by my
