The sun, a star that is the center of the Solar System. This star gives necessities we, the humans living on Earth need such as natural sunlight. Although natural sunlight benefits humans by giving them Vitamin D, this sunlight can also harm humans(1). Natural sunlight contains UV (ultraviolet) rays, an electromagnetic radiation invisible to the human eye. The UV rays that reaches the Earth’s surface consists of UVB rays and UVA rays. The UVA rays can penetrate the deeper layers of a human’s skin, creating groups of free atoms that can cause premature aging of the skin and other problems to the human body’s immune system. The UVB rays however, don’t penetrate deeply into the skin but they can damage a human’s DNA, causing sunburn and skin cancer(2). Compared to skin cancer and the premature aging of the skin caused by the UV ray, sunburn seems like a small problem but sunburn is the primary cause of humans getting skin cancer. If a person gets …show more content…
As one can see the benefits of the sunscreen affect people positively, but the benefits of the sunscreens won’t matter if it isn’t used at all (a social aspect). Many people in this world do not use sunscreen because of various reasons (some people forget to put the sunscreen on, some people doesn’t buy the sunscreen at all, etc), making them vulnerable to the UV ray. If people are vulnerable to the UV rays, the chance of them getting sunburns, skin cancer and other skin diseases will increase. For an example: in a survey taken in the United States of America 31%, of the adults (that took the survey) said that they didn’t use sunscreen(9). As one can see this shows there are people who do not use sunscreens thus proving the fact that as long as people don’t use sunscreens, the UV rays will continue to harm those people, making those people’s skins get sunburn and (or) skin

Extra Virgin Olive Oil Impairs UV-Induced Cell Damage in Cancer-Prone Mice INTRODUCTION Ultraviolet radiation produces various wavelengths that are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The four different UV wavelengths are classified as UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA produces the longest wavelength at 320-400nm, UVB produces wavelengths from 290-320nm, and UVC wavelengths are the shortest wavelength that is completely absorbed by the ozone layer. However, it is known that UVA and UVB play an important role in premature skin aging, eye damage and most importantly skin cancers as the UV rays pierce the atmosphere. Studies have shown that UVB radiation is extremely mutagenic in animals compared to UVA radiation.…

The formation of Melanin in our skin as a response to the exposure to the UV light is the protective mechanism. Melanin, while protecting our skin cells is also responsible for the dark pigment of our skin. It is the same mechanism that is released when we go suntanning. The exposure to the UV light causes the skin to release melatonin, giving us the " "golden glow" many of us are after. People, who live in the northern areas of the globe, further from the Equator where the atmosphere is thicker, shielding from the radiation, do not need as much Melanin in their skin.…

Every year, millions of people lather on sunscreen, thinking it could protect them from skin damage and cancer. Every person is taught that the sun is the main reason for skin cancer. I started thinking a long time ago—if sunblock is to prevent skin cancer, why is the sun still to blame if we are adequately protected? The way sunblock is meant to work is by blocking the damaging UV and UVB rays. For many years now, the media would have you believe that you’re to use sunblock every time you’re going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time.…
