While having sex with her, Nemeth yelled out her ex-husbands name, which caused him to destroy their apartment and then violate her body while she was unconscious. The homicide case of Maria Nemeth, is just one of many murder cases in the United States. It is common knowledge that the United States has high rates of violence, as compared to other industrialized countries. However, just like the South it theorized to have a “culture of violence” the same can be said for the entire United States. As compared to other industrialized countries, where violence is not used to advertise men’s cologne or disguised as a sport, violence rates tend to be lower. Whereas in the United States, where there are some many deviant violent cultures and subcultures, the negative effects of being overly exposed to violence is downplayed. While referencing the terror inflicted on the people of the Dominican Republic under the reign of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, the author Robert Crassweiler once said: The extent to which violence, both open and covert, is a constant factor in the life of the region may cause surprise. The incongruous and rather unreal quality of many events, whether fanciful or farcical in appearance, may also prove unexpected. Understanding the Dominican Republic’s cultural atmosphere without discussing the lasting effects of the notoriously violent Trujillato is impossible. In The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, our main characters continue to be influenced by the tumultuous Trujillo regime more than twenty years after its fall.…

The National Institute of Justice Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 1998 study found that “18 percent of surveyed women…experienced a completed or attempted rape at some time in their life” (Tjaden and Thoennes 3). Consequently, with statistics like these and personal experience Linda Hasselstrom tackles the controversial subject of gun carrying by women. She uses her article “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” to argue her take on the subject. Hasselstrom appeals to an audience who might not understand her decision for carrying a gun and might find the subject controversial.…

Violence can be described as the intent to hurt or damage something or someone, which can be done in a number of ways. The group of writings that I chose was under the title of “Cultures of Violence”, and I believe that this heading efficaciously describes the two essays within it. On War by James Boswell, and The Paranoid Style of American Policing by Ta-Nehisi Coates, each tell their thoughts on violence and how they view it within different areas of today’s society. However, I feel that On War is better able to effectively convey its purpose. The purpose of On War by James Boswell was to tell his personal thought on the irrationality of war.…

Cure Violence www.cureviolence.org Cure Violence is an organization founded by epidemiologist Gary Slutkin. Dr. Slutkin spent a decade in underdeveloped countries, fighting epidemic diseases. When he returned to the US, he’d all but forgotten what it was like to have running water, and adjustable temperature in the home. He also had no news of the US, so he found it both dismaying and compelling to hear about the rampant violence in some parts of the US, most especially in Chicago, Illinois. As a result, Dr. Slutkin began researching the violence problem in the same way that he tracked infectious diseases in those other countries, and he found that the trajectories were the same.…

Steven Pinker’s “Violence Vanquished” is an article that focuses on the decline of violence since the start of the twenty-first century. He argues that violence today is relatively nonexistent in comparison to that of the past. However, deaths from rapes, shootings, and fights are still occurring today. Pinker uses a chart that estimates the deaths of people from the twentieth century to the twenty-first century (Pinker 701). The early 1900s included countless deaths from wars, slavery, and other violent conflicts.…

In “A History of Violence,” Steven Pinker argues that violence continues to diminish. Pinker goes as far back as biblical times to prove evidence of our vicious past. He even analyzes murder rates from present day compared to the fourteenth century to find the present day completely outnumbered. Kings and Queens of sixteenth-century Paris watched cats being strangled and burned for entertainment. All examples from this essay show the violence that mankind was once accustomed to.…

The ripple effect of violence against women spills over into the family, the children and can create a generation force for years to follow. Another issue with violence against women is that it is heavily unreported. There are a few major concerns about this particular type of crime going unreported. It hinders the ability for law enforcement to track the consistency of the crimes as it relates to victim and suspect profiles, patterns of behaviors as well as locations favored for this type of delinquency. Through research utilizing victimization surveys, it was found that about half of domestic violence victims interviewed reported their last violent incident to police.…

Within the studies, literature, and the differential theory and social learning theory reviewed, there is an overwhelming common thread among the data reviewed that supports the claim that said exposure to violence has a detrimental impact on the development and behavior of a child. This powerful evidence reinforces an already well-established direct link between exposure to violence and aggression in children. Researchers have provided significant insight into the resulting outcome of a child’s repeated exposure to violence and Sutherland, along with Bandura, support such insight. Realizing the potential risks of this exposure is imperative to battling the subsequent effects.…

While it may not come as a surprise to know that the media tends to sensationalize crimes like domestic violence as a quick and easy way to entice viewers/readers, in reality the representation of the crime is skewed as news reports tend to show male on female violence and usual about the female who comes forwarded with her case, is hospitalized, or was murdered. Researchers like Kohlman, Baig, Balice, DiRubbo, Plancencia, Skale, and Aquino claim that focusing mainly on stories like these will only serve to reinforce gender stereotypes, normalize the crime as an everyday occurrence, and desensitize the viewers/readers to future tragedies involving domestic violence (2014). Thanks to the media’s continuous portrayals of domestic violence as a brutal crime mainly instigated by the masculine partner many citizens will be conditioned to assume that whenever a crime like this happens one party will almost always be innocent while the other party will…
