The carrying capacity of Wisconsin Fast Plants (Brassica Rapa) in a 2-liter bottle growing environment Introduction In this lab we conducted an experiment in which we created a habitat in which plants grown; We will determine if the plants will grow successfully in this habitat. We will plant “Wisconsin Fast Plant”seeds, also known as (Brassica Rapa). The Wisconsin Fast Plants are a small, fragile sized plant that has a short growing period and produces seeds at a high density. We will observe them as frequently as possible and record the heights each day we make observations.…
The purpose of this lab experiment is to extract chromatin from an animal liver and strawberries. Unlike humans whom are diploid organisms with two sets of each chromosome, one from the mother and the other from the father, strawberries like most fruits are polyploidy, consisting of more than two copies of the same gene. Strawberries are octoploid that have eight copies of each gene, making it an ideal fruit for DNA extraction. Frozen strawberries are ideal because the ice in the intracellular fluid causes the cell to lyse and expand, destroying the cell and nucleus membrane of the cell. Strawberries are soft and easy to crush using a mortar and pestle.…
The purpose of this lab is to examine cross sections from the leaves of C3 and C4 plants and to determine the morphological differences between them while relating those differences to their metabolism. In C3 plants the carbon dioxide is first incorporated into a 3-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place throughout the mesophyll cells. In comparison C4 plants, the CO2 is first incorporated into a 4-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place within the inner cells.…

In this lab my group and I learned about what type of test to conduct when determining a pollution source. I predicted that the Whitmore Strawberry Farm was producing the pollution that was causing algal blooms to form in the lake. The farm used a combination of organic and commercial inorganic fertilizers, which could have been the pollutant. The Whitmore Strawberry Farm was not the source of the pollution, the source was the Emerald Estates.…
My hypothesis that the germinated peas would consume more oxygen than the non-germinating peas was accepted. Looking at the results the germinated pea results of how much oxygen was consumed was much higher than the ungerminated peas. The hypothesis that the P. savitum would rise in oxygen consumptions as its temperature rose was accepted as well. Looking at the data and the line graph, it is clear that as each temperature got higher the amount of oxygen consumed went up as well. Most enzyme activity after 45ºC generally become denatured and can’t function properly.…
In this experiment, the hypothesis gave the expected results. The positive DNA has pGLO that can grow regardless that has the presence of the Ampicillin. The negative DNA does not have pGLO and thus cannot grow in the presence of Ampicillin because pGLO contains ampicillin-resistance gene. When it is not pGLO breaks the Ampicillin. The LB does not have Ampicillin and can grow colonies on the agar plates.…
10/15/15: Today my experiment was approved. I plan to start on the 18th. 10/18/15: Today was the start date of my experiment.…
Avocado chickpea salad sandwich is easy, light and healthy sandwich to make for lunch. First, cook a big batch of chickpea one day and had a bag of them sitting in the fridge. Next, mash some together with some avocado and herbs. After that, add one teaspoon fresh lime juice. Add salt and pepper to taste.…
Among the many supplements available for alternative and supplementary therapies, echinacea and flaxseed are two popular ones used today. Despite the disbelief of some in the use of alternative medicine, research shows that it does have effects on the body and it is important for healthcare workers to be aware of these effects to ensure the best care for their patients. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the therapeutic effects, indications, contraindications, side effects, cost, and availability of both echinacea and flaxseed. Echinacea Echinacea is a North American herbaceous flowering plant that belongs to the genus of the daisy family. It was first used by Native Americans.…
Purpose: The overall goal of this lab was to perform a procedure on E. Coli which involved transferring genes that encoded for the green fluorescent protein into E. Coli to see if the transferred genes would make a difference on the growth and whether or not the bacteria would glow under UV light. Hypothesis: If the bacteria with the pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB and ampicillin then the bacteria will grow but not glow under UV light. If the bacteria with the pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB, ampicillin, and arabinose then it will be able to grow and glow under UV light. If the bacteria without pGLO plasmid was grown on a plate containing LB and ampicillin then it will not be able to grow or glow under UV light.…
Introduction Oviposition is described as one of the final steps in reproduction in insects. It includes the deposition of mature eggs onto an object that is outside the body of the female insect (Saunders 2003). Where and how the organism oviposits depends on the behavioral aspects of different species. Another factor that can influence the oviposition of eggs involves the release of chemicals. The Diving Beetle chooses plants that have readily available food for their newly hatched young.…
Herbal Diabetes Treatment Momordica Charantia, also known as the bitter melon or karela, has been used as an herbal treatment for diabetes throughout the world for centuries. In fact, it “is commonly known as vegetable insulin” (Uebanso). It is primarily grown in tropical areas throughout the Amazon, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. Its is physically described with a green, oblong cucumber like shape with prickles protruding from it. The seeds, fruit, and tissue are all used for treatment.…
the fruits of V. macrocarpon, V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum (Table, figure, pp). 6.3.3. Powder behaviour of V. macrocarpon, V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum with different chemical reagents Powder behaviour is also an important tool for the determination of constituents in herbal drugs and it provides an idea about their chemical nature. The different colour changes observed in long, short UV and visible light after treatment of fruit powder of V. macrocarpon, V. myrtillus and V. uliginosum with different chemical reagents viz. NaOH, KOH, H2SO4, HCl, HNO3, Na2CO3, FeCl3 and iodine vapours were noted (Table, figure, pp).…
Purpose: To test the effect of inorganic and organic catalyst concentration and surface area on the reaction rate. Introduction: In this experiment the experimenters will seek to determine what factors determine the rate of a reaction with a catalyst. A catalyst is a molecule that starts a chemical reaction, but it is not part of the reaction it is causing.…
