Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Seurat Analysis

Formal Analysis The art piece that I am choosing to write my formal analysis on is A “Sunday afternoon on the island of LA Grande Jette” by Georges Seurat. The reason that I am choosing this piece is because ever since I was a small child and I saw this piece in an art class at my elementary school, I was always fascinated on the beauty and the simplicity of this piece. This piece represents what a Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jette would look like around the year of 1884. As you can see, the subject matter seems to focus on individuals enjoying the day in a leisurely fashion. Seurat makes it seem as if all of the individuals in this piece have a sense of relaxation, with each individual and or group of people. It seems like they have all forgotten about their busy and fast-paced lives with the way that all of them are lounging around and just taking the day and the beautiful weather in. From the perspective of me as a child I was already madly in love with this piece. Now, from the perspective of a college student who has only a little background knowledge about all of the elements and principles of design that bring this piece together, I am even more in love with the painting. The way that Seurat uses only dabs and dots to paint the entire piece but yet is still able to take advantage of perspective, vertical and horizontal lines and even more elements is astounding to me. I cannot even begin to imagine how focused and precise he must have been to be able to achieve all that he has done. And in my personal opinion and well as probably the opinion of many others, this is a true piece of art that deserves all of the recognition and fame that it receives if not even
