Sundara Summary

Decent Essays
The protagonist (or leading character of the book) is Sundara. Sandara is the girl who fled Cambodia with her aunt's family to escape the Khmer Rouge army. In this book there is no antagonist, but there is more main characters like Pon, Jonathan, Jonathan’s Mother, Grandmother, Mrs.Cathcart, Ravy, Soka, Jonathan’s Father, Cathy, Naro. A setting that I found in the book was on a Saturday morning where Naro, Soka, and Grandma were heading to the Chinese grocery store in Salem. The mood at this setting was very depressed, because at this setting Sundara was sighing a lot, and was disappointed the whole time.
The first important event is when Sundara, Soka, Naro, and her grandma leave Cambodia to go to America. Second event is when Soka’s baby dies. Third, Sundara meets Jonathan. Fourth, Sundara and Jonathan fall for each other. Fifth, Chamroeun dies. Sixth, Sundara meets Cathy. Seventh, Jonathan admits to Sundara that he loves her and not Cathy. Eighth, Jonathan quites the football team. Ninth, Sundara breaks down crying. Tenth, Sundara confesses to Jonathan that she loves him.

This theme relates to life because people from Cambodia really do come to the US.
The two characters that I choose are Sundara and Cathy. Sundara is not very popular at school but Cathy is the popular girl at school, Sundara is really nice but Cathy can be very mean. But overall Sundara is a better well rounded person but Cathy is very

The first theme is standing up for what matters to you. The author, Ria Voros, communicates her theme effectively by showing this in the main character as she stands up for what matters to her. An example in the text is when she stood up for james by making posters. It mentioned in the story what poster she was making “I speak to no one, hunch over my computer, type, cut/paste, download and with all the artistic talent I possess, create” (pg.182). This shows that she is standing up for her friend by using her artistic talent to show everyone that James was something to her.…

This can be used to find the theme, which is to cherish loved ones as much as possible, since they could be killed or taken away without warning. It is easy to tell from Sonny’s thoughts that he cares deeply about his father, and would be devastated if he was killed. The characters’ thoughts, actions, and feelings help the reader identify what the theme is of the…

There is no protagonist or antagonist in the novel, both men share the same experiences but through different lenses of the world. I chose these three themes to write about because they are the most important and they show they show us, the readers, how they can really effect or change many people’s lives. The novel begins by one of the characters, Elaine O’Dea, immediately stating that Alice Franklin, another girl in the book slept with two guys in one night! (Mathieu 1) Since Elaine says that the readers get the hint that Alice is a girl who gets around with a bunch of guys.…

As we all know, the theme of a story is the lesson that is being taught throughout the novel. But a theme can also be the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, or a person's thoughts. All stories have a theme, but they may not always be directly stated. This requires readers to dig deep down into the text and analyze the lessons that they have acquired through the book. Between the two excerpts, "Angelas Ashes" and "The Street", there is common theme that perseverance is important when times get tough in life.…

The one thing I pointed out as a theme was power of a good friendship. Kevin lives with a tragic disease, and max lives with the pressure of knowing what his dad has done in the past, but that doesn't ruin or affect their friendship in any way, as it should not. First, Friendship is the most important thing in life. A friend is someone there when you are having troubles, and need…

The antagonist of the novel is Roland. He is a very muscular and manipulative character who uses other people for his personal gain. He is a round, static character. When we are first introduced to Roland, he is a power hungry teenager who is doing everything he can to make other people follow him. He is a static character because as shusterman says in chapter 59, “He swallows hard.…
