The helarctos malayanus, commonly known as sun bear, is the smallest breed of bear in the world. An average a fully grown sun bear will weigh between 30kg and 60kg and will be 120cm to 150cm tall. A sun bear’s fur is also short and thick so that their fur doesn’t get stuck on branches but can still offer protection from branches so the sun bear doesn’t get scratched. Sun bears also don’t have fur on the bottom of their feet so climbing is easier. Sun bear’s commonly have black fur but can also be a dark brown, grey or red. Sun bears also have a yellowy-orange crescent shape on their chest and a lighter coloured face. Sun bears have long, curled nails which they use to climb trees, where they spend most of their life.
