How Do Humans Affect The Environment In Thomas Sumner's Changing Climate

Great Essays
In a 2016 article entitled “Changing Climate” the author Thomas Sumner discusses a variety of topics that revolve around how humans have impacted the Earth’s climate. “Changing Climate” examines climate change research, ocean circulation, hurricane research, and geology and climate. This article uses past and present research to validate the importance of these issues to create a well written exploration of human’s effect on the climate. Despite the fact that there is not a lot of data about what Earth’s environment was like before the early 1900’s, Sumner makes a compelling argument about how humans have had a negative influence on their surroundings.

Although this is not necessarily true. Sumner fails to recognize that there were already environmental protection acts that had already existed before the movie was released in 2006. For example, Earth Day was created in 1970 to bring awareness of the environment to politics and people all over the nation were ready to help the planet. An Inconvenient Truth just reignited the spark of social uproar that had already existed in the public. Suddenly after the premiere, climate change was on the people’s radar again. Sumner backs up this statement by expressing that 195 nations committed to an ambitious pledge to retaliate against climate change and control carbon emissions. In the next decade after the movie caught the public’s attention, scientists have made major advances in technology concerning climate change. The author later includes evidence on how an enhanced understanding of Earth’s inner workings and better climate-simulating computers have given experts a better grasp on how the climate will change. Better technology is a wonderful thing when it comes to predicting what the planet may be like in the future. This way if a simulation says Earth is doomed, humans can take precautionary steps to prevent the worst from …show more content…
The author claims global warming is causing extreme temperatures and this in turn has caused thousands of people to die since the year 1900. Climate change has raised humidity levels and humidity can prevent the body’s natural cooling method from happening. Sumner does not go into detail about how high temperatures can stop people from sweating, but by the 2060s, he predicts that 250 million people across the globe will face deadly levels of heat and humidity. On the flip side, fatal cold fronts will become less common and cause less casualties. Climate change redirects Arctic winds which means areas that are normally hit with this chilly weather are

With the ice caps melting, and the planet’s ozone layer depleting, mankind could be driving the Earth to extinction. The study of the earth and how it works allows scientists to develop new ways to try to save the Earth. While many debate the existence of climate change, it is a very real thing causing harm to our planet. The use of fossil fuels, and the development of new alternative energy sources could be the solution. Climate Change One of the biggest factors changing our earth is global warming.…

Cause and Effect Essay Four degrees warmer doesn’t sound too bad right? Well what if it caused major floods, severe droughts and heat waves. Doesn’t sound too nice anymore does it? In the year of 2100, that could happen if more people are not aware of how climate change could affect their lives in the future. With the high rise of greenhouse gases, public denial and no steps toward change in laws and regulations, climate change will affect future generations for the worse.…

The IPCC, said in its 2013 report that “even modest warming may drive large increases in transmission of malaria, if conditions are otherwise suitable.” Sea level are also rising due to glaciers melting. The increasing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion have led to an exponential increase in the net amount of CO2 being dissolved in the ocean. Dissolved CO2 creates carbonic acid, which reduces the ocean pH level, making it more acidic. This is bad as it would very likely have a major impact on the ocean life. If the CO2 concentration continues to rise and the pH level continues to fall at current rates, the ocean pH could drop by as much as 0.5 during the 22nd…

Also, the sea levels will rise due to ice melting and people who live near the shores all across the world will slowing watch the water creeping up the shore. According to Quirin Schiermeier, a writer for Nature, an International weekly journal of science, “Scientists have come up with the firmest evidence so far that global warming will significantly increase the intensity of the most extreme storms worldwide” (Hurricanes are getting fiercer). In other words, global warming is causing the wind directions to shift, resulting in extreme storms. With all these effects, the devastation of global warming seems inevitable. However, there is a solution to slowing down climate change and eventually fixing it.…

The climate and seasons go through natural changes also. “In general, climate changes prior to the Industrial Revolution in the 1700s can be explained by natural causes, such as changes in solar energy, volcanic eruptions, and natural changes in greenhouse gas concentrations” (EPA). There are many economic, psychological, and even metaphysical reasons why some do not “believe” in climate change. Some think that the costs are too high to fix, that climate change consequences are horrible to think about, and that nothing bad is going to happen to our earth. People are in denial about what is actually occurring.…

Additionally, they took the time to familiarize themselves with the climate vulnerability of the research. Then they looked at future projections of climate changes and the impacts to estimate likely costs. As a result, they felt they needed to address the cost of the extreme weather. Biesecker, pointed out, in the report in the last decade, the federal government has spent $350 billion of taxpayer money on extreme weather, including fire events, floods, droughts, cost of disaster response and relief. The report also state's climate change is expected to negatively continue and will get extremely worse.…

Alejandro Vieyra Mr. Moody English 4 5 December 2016 Climate Change Must Stop Climate change is the changing of weather patterns in regions all around the world. The primary cause of climate change is the appreciable amount of fossil fuel emissions that humans are sending into the atmosphere. These emissions consist of carbon dioxide that ultimately retain more heat in our atmosphere than needed, thus elevating the temperature everywhere around the globe and damaging ecosystems greatly. Many people, including politicians and scientists, believe that climate change is simply a hoax. Although some prefer to believe that climate change is fake and we have nothing to worry about, there are concrete facts that prove these individuals wrong.…

Unfortunately, because of global warming, the permafrost is melting causing the trees to become unstable (Gore 89). Eventually this can lead to the them dying, leaving Alaska barren. Although the land masses of the world are effected deeply by the global warming, the oceans are as well. The greenhouse effect has caused the oceans to become warmer than they should be.…

Al Gore’s movie is said to be a misrepresentation of what is really happening and that his movie actually was showing the things that occur naturally. While Al Gore’s movie paints a picture of doom and gloom, there are benefits from global warming. A benefit of global warming in the North is longer growing seasons. Another benefit is that human lives will be saved as a result of global warming because more people die as a result of being exposed to colder temperatures versus hotter temperatures. Certain areas of the world become more habitable as a result of global warming and some areas will be less habitable.…
