For a high-school student, the best time is the three-month summer vacation. It is so awaited that once it comes, children completely forget the word “school” and enjoy the free time as much as they can. Unfortunately, the consequences after this three month vacation strongly affects the student test achievements in a negative way. The problem is being discusses for years and there are not any permanent solutions yet, but there are many proven facts, which indicate that when children are outside of school and are not at all engaged to their education, it is really hard for them to keep up with the material and to succeed. The research is done with the help of meta-analytical procedures, which stated that “summer loss equaled about one month on a grade level equivalent scale” (Cooper 227). It also proves that this decline is greater for students with special educational need. It is absolutely vital for them to be under constant care and supervision. They need help with the material and the homework, otherwise they cannot keep up. Also, students learn best when the instructions are continuous and three months are too long a period not to be involved with school work. In addition, such a long period of time can have harmful consequences not only under students, but also on teachers. According to an article by Nora Fleming, in which 500 teachers were asked how much time they spend on material, which students should already have learned, “nearly one-fourth said they devote at least five or six weeks at the beginning of the new school year going over the material, while two thirds claimed at least three to four weeks of reteaching” (Fleming 5). As shown, teachers spend enormous time on something that should have been learned by the students. During the summer vacation, the majority of students are left alone. Their parents cannot look after them all the time, because they have full-time jobs, which they cannot get out of. One temporary solution is the help of grandparents, but there comes a time when the grandparents get older and are not able to watch after their grandchildren anymore. When students are not old enough, especially the ones from the fifth to eight grade, and are left alone for two-thirds of the day, every day, it is likely for them to do something reckless or become imprudent. They can be easily influenced by troubled friends and the consequences may be fatal. They might start drinking alcohol and smoking at early age, which is one of the parents’ worst
