In essence, summer is a period of extended recess for children to relax and engage in their self interests. Over the course of a school year, kids are forced to learn about material that does not address their passions. Summer vacation provides students with a broad range of experiences that allows them to explore activities that they would never encounter in a classroom setting. While school is in session, children are given limited time to partake in tasks such as sports, art, drama, socializing with friends, or engage in material that is not present in the school curriculum. Although I am in favor of summer vacation, the evidence against it is noteworthy. For example, a large sum of information is learned over the duration of an 180 day school year, and a three month absence from education negates the majority of progress that had been made. This is just one of the many negative implications of summer vacation. Therefore, summer vacation both inhibits and excites learning and development.

One piece of evidence against summer vacation is, the rapid growth of the economies and the rising academic standards of countries such as China and India, two countries with a rigorous academic schedule. Chinese students have consistently scored higher in areas of math and science than American students, providing reason to believe our lack of schooling is ineffective compared to others.
