Summer Reading Project- Shoot-Out By: Mike Lupica
Summary: The book I read over the summer was called Shoot-Out written by Mike Lupica. This inspiring story is about a soccer player named Jake Stuart. The story begins with main character interacting with his first conflict. Jake has to move to a new part of his town. At first, Jake isn’t bothered with this change of setting, but he is bothered by the new soccer team. The team located in his new town is horrible. Jake was so accustomed to winning championships with his old team back in his hometown. He was always a good player on a good team. But now he’s the star player of a losing team. The title is significant because it foreshadows the ending very well. The title could also be referring to the variety of shoot outs that occurred over the course of the season. But the most significant shoot out was the one that decided the game against Jake’s old …show more content…
This quote is relevant to the section it is found in because Jake is preparing his teammates for the big game against his old school. He has to make sure his teammates are mentally and physically prepared. This quote means that Jake has to learn to lead his teammates while they are playing on the field and while they deal with issues of the field. In this case, Jake’s teammate, Kevin, is dealing with a loss in his family. As the captain, Jake has to help support Kevin through this hard time. Right before this quote occurs, Jake learns that Kevin experienced a loss in his family. The quote appears after their last practice before the big game. This quote has a few literary elements within it. One literary element this quote displays is characterization. This quote reveals Jake’s true character, as a person, and a soccer player. Another literary elements this quote displays is conflict. This quote gives the main character another conflict to deal with. The conflict being the loss in his teammates
