As I sit here at my computer, I look out my tiny window and see the clear, blue sky contrasted by the pale grass and line of dark trees in the background that make up the woods with which I am so familiar. It is beautiful. It is safe. It is home. It is free. It has so much potential, and in some small way, represents what it means to me to be an American.
As an American youth, I grew up with a mindset of independence. There was never a time when I was told, “You can’t do this.” Instead, I was told that I had the ability to pursue my own passions. As a woman in this country, I am not forced to take up a certain occupation, required to marry a specific man, or barred from personal education; I have the power to shape my life in the way that …show more content…
My role required the careful coordination of personnel from various departments to create and manage the event. I had to be flexible and willing to change plans at any moment in case something went awry. My organizational and managerial skills were highly evidenced as I worked diligently over several months to see this two day event successfully through. Additionally, my social skills were in demand as I strove to be sensitive to the fears and stresses carried by each new freshman. I remembered how I felt during my orientation and dedicated myself to deal graciously and generously with them all. I desired to make each one feel special and cared for, so during the two months of preparation, I worked hard to memorize their names. When we met, face-to-face, I honored each of the 500 students by using their name in conversation to welcome them personally to the college. My compassion and empathy will be beneficial abroad because it will enable me to be develop a cultural sensitivity that will enhance my interactions with nationals. Additionally, my flexibility will help facilitate my adaptation to the culture, and my amiable personality will prove me to be a good representative of the United
