Summer Camp Counselor Essay

Describe the ideal summer camp counselor. In what ways do you meet this ideal, and how can you improve? *
The ideal summer camp counselor is enthusiastic, inclusive, caring, and fun. I am enthusiastic by getting campers excited about activities, especially when a camper is not looking forward to a particular activity. I am inclusive by helping the campers include everyone in the bunk. I help the shy campers make friends. I engage all of my campers in conversations, not just the girls that start the conversation with their counselor, and I do not pick favorites. I am caring by willing to take a walk to chat one-on-one with a camper who is having a bad day. I am a fun camp counselor by planning and executing great bounding activities that everyone enjoys. I can improve by leading group games for the whole bunk more often, as every other day.

Describe what relevant experience you have had outside of summer camp that has prepared you to be a counselor in the Trainee Program, and explain how. *
Taking on leadership roles in my sorority has helped prepare me to be a Trainee counselor. I

A fixed mindset likes to avoid challenges, give up easily on obstacles, not put forth effort, and ignore useful negative feedback. A growth mindset likes to embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, always puts forth effort, and learn from criticism. In the discussion, Trainees will talk about an experience having to do with their mindset and how a situation could be different by having a growth mindset. I have chosen this because having a growth mindset is very important to be able to develop as a person. As it is not easy to learn how to be a camp counselor, the trainees would learn that in order to do their best in their department and little bunk, they have to learn from their evaluations and be able to overcome

I have learned so much from my experience as a camp counselor, and I have also met many people that I would not have had the chance to meet, without this experience,” said former camp counselor, Lyra Schroeder. Many people have been attending the camp since they were children, and 90% of the campers are returnees from previous years. “Overall, Beacon Lodge is a great place for people with disabilities to come and have the typical summer camp experience but adapted to their unique needs. In the adult camp, the campers have friendships with other campers that go back decades. It’s also an opportunity for the campers to come back to a place they know well and feel comfortable in, and be able to participate in activities they may not get to do out in the world,” said…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

As a Fish Camp counselor I want to gain a stronger network through the entire camp and develop a bond with others beyond who I have met my first two semesters of college. I want to be a mentor for the next year freshman as they transition into college just like my DG-discussion group-parents did for me. I’d also like to develop my leadership qualities even further through the entire process. The counselors that were in my camp had strong relationships with one another and that is something I want to be apart of. I want to help the Class of 2020 in anyway I can because the counselors my year influenced me significantly and helped me transition into college.…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

In GPS 1010, I have learned that a person’s mindset is established in (1) a particular way of thinking; or (2) a person’s attitude and set of opinions about something. In addition to these items, one can either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These mindsets play a huge role in one’s success or failure. The mindset has “two meanings to ability, not one: a fixed ability that needs to be proven and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning” and repetition. To sum up, “the fixed mindset makes you concerned with how you’ll be judged; the growth mindset makes you concerned with improving.”…

For seven years, I enjoyed a weeklong summer camp at Camp Ernst. I swam, kayaked, rode horses, and participated in arts and crafts. Each summer, I dragged myself from the sleepy summer rut in which I always fell and woke up for polar bear swims and archery practice. Although I have long since ended this routine, the camp greatly affected my social skills and my perception of nature and of my family.…

Growth mindset means the ability to learn from your mistakes and to improve on them. For example, if one was to fail at something, they would try many new ways to prevent themselves from failing again. He/she would try harder to improve their skills in which they can improve their chances of doing better. In the other hand, fixed mindset is the complete opposite. Fixed mindset is the state of mind in which a person who fails feels ashamed and does not do anything to improve themselves.…
