The activity where communication was central to the process was the building a bridge activity. Communication was a vital role that really helped/hindered goal attainment during the activity. A brief overview of the building a bridge activity is that as a group, we would use communication to help us build similar halves of a bridge once we divide into two groups within our original group, that are separated by a tarp. Communication helped us achieve the goal of having a similar bridge halves even though there was the obstacle of only being allowed to ask 3 questions to our other group during the building process. The first struggle within my group was that we were all talking over each other to get our opinions across which we quickly discovered…

CPD 150 (Strategies for College Success) is a counseling course that has been a requirement for first year students at numerous Maricopa Community Colleges. The purpose of this course is to focus on improving student success through personal growth and college experiences. Not only that but developing study skills and encouraging career and educational planning are also seen throughout the course (“Counseling Courses”). However, the majority of the material covered in this class is common sense or there are resources on campus that can help out with various college issues. Also, taking this “college success” class is a waste of time and money.…

Attending Buena Vista University it seems as if everyone plays a sport, the small campus and even smaller student body creates an environment that puts an emphasis on athletics. In my three years attending Buena Vista, I have had two different roommates, both athletes themselves. Living with athletes creates challenges and opportunities that are special to athletes. For a washed up high school athlete getting the chance to live vicariously through some of my best friends at the collegiate level is an experience like non-other. One of the biggest concerns when first heading off to college is will you be able to make friends.…

One of my parents main reason behind the moving to America was there wanting of us to have a world class education. With my future enrollment in Tickle college of engineering, it tells me that all of my parent’s trouble are not wasted. The opportunity to prepare for college before school starts, seems like a very interesting opportunity. The Summer Bridge program will provide a great chance for me to experience life in college.…

Not everyone who attends college are successful at completing the courses needed to graduate. For many reasons, college students are forced to drop out willingly, are withdrawn by administration, or simply lose interest in furthering their education. However, the college students who complete college successfully and make it to graduation share some habits that make the odds of being successful work in their favor. Many college students succeed because they make it a priority to attend and involve themselves in class sessions regularly, take control of their education, and nurture relationships with the instructors on their school campus. One of the most important causes of being a successful college student is actually attending class sessions regularly.…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

Student Affairs Administration Examination: Question 1 In the last 10 years, a number of reports have been issued by the preeminent student affairs associations, specifically the American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. These seem to be in a pursuit to frame the future direction of the student affairs profession. Reports such as the Student Learning Imperative (SLI) (ACPA, 1996) and Principles of Good Practice (ACPA/ NASPA, 1997) have been welcomed for introducing a new student affairs philosophy focused on student learning and encouraging collaboration between student and academic affairs professionals. Certainly these reports have had the effect of energizing student affairs professionals and providing a call for the field.…

The Campus Discovery Reflective Responses required students to go out of their comfort zone to explore various aspects and tools on campus that are beneficial socially or academically. This exposure followed by reflection, assisted students in acquiring knowledge that will help them reach their goals. This process allowed students to realize that they aren’t just in it on their own, but actually have a variety of tools that if used, can make your time in college flow more smoothly. In particular, visiting the Student Success Center and making an advising appointment seemed very effective for my success at UWB. This center is a tool that students should use from time-to-time while enrolled in college, so through the act of having the initiative…
