Summer Break Psychology

On August 8, I sat at the movie theaters with my friend. After a long week of doing what teenagers do most over summer break, nothing, I decided to spend my last available weekend at the movies, before the first day back to school. I took my seat behind a family with a little girl around the age of 3. The movie was about five minutes started, when the girl suddenly began screaming. I ignored it at first, thinking that her parents would eventually jump in and solve it. Both parents sat ignoring the girl’s tantrum while continuing to watch the movie, almost pretending as if she was never crying in the first place. I don’t think it’s very respectful when parents ignore their child’s annoying behavior. It shows that they have no respect for the …show more content…
I begun to believe that parents feel the need not to “break their child’s spirit” and they become afraid to give consequences hoping that their child will just “get it” and eventually stop and realize that they are in a public place. It almost seems as though parents probably don’t know the correct way to respond in a public place since you can’t physically punish a child in public so they decide to just let the child cry it out hoping that they will tire themselves out. I heard a story one time about a guy named Brian. Brian went to IHOP one morning around 10:15am. It was on New Year’s Day so he went out on a celebration at the County Inn in Santa Clara. A woman with a baby came in and sat in the booth right in front of him. The baby began crying and eventually started screaming very loudly. The woman just kind of sat there and continued eating. He began to think to himself, ‘Just because you’re used to it and aren’t annoyed by the shrieking of your child, doesn’t mean that no one else isn’t’. She should’ve took the child outside for a minute for the sake of others trying to enjoy their morning breakfast, but instead chose to enjoy her meal without being considerate of …show more content…
Sometimes plane rides are the worst. I wouldn’t know this from experience considering the fact that I’ve never rode on a plane. I watched a movie one time about a businessman named Jay. Jay usually worked out of state and travelled back home occasionally for holiday visits. Over the Holidays, he had a 6am flight from Buffalo to Chicago. When he was about 5 minutes into the flight, a baby girl started crying, almost the whole time with a total of 1 ½ hours. Then the kicking in the back of his seat begun, this time it was a little boy, with the parent sitting next to him, reading a book. He was very relieved to get off the plane. He was hoping that those two families weren’t getting on the connecting flight to San Jose. Surprisingly, the family of the little boy was. He was very upset to find this out and they sat right in front of him, plus there was a crying baby boy behind him. Both children were causing disruptions for Jay and you could even tell the flight attendant was annoyed. The parents of both children didn’t seem to mind their child’s annoying behaviors. After getting off of the plane, Jay was extremely traumatized. Everytime he saw a little kid or even a baby, his heart jumped. It’s a miracle of how much of an impact these parents have on the

Because of risky flight conditions, a plane heading from Atlanta, Georgia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in July, 2008 almost crashed during its landing. For many passengers, including seven year old Blake Hoffmaster and his family, the experience was traumatizing. Hoffmaster, now a freshman in high school, recalls the event, remembering that the plane was flying through a thunderstorm, and the first signs of a problem was turbulence, then the plane dropped 400 feet in two seconds when attempting to land. As he was young at the time and did not understand what exactly was happening, Hoffmaster thought the bumpy ride and sudden plunge was “cool”. The ride had been smooth up until that point.…

The letter to the editor entitled, “Endless Bawling Can Damage”, published in the Gleaner of Monday, August 8, 2016 was written by Shawna Kay Williams-Pinnock. A teacher of English, Mrs Williams- Pinnock outlines the correlation between babies crying continually and aggressive behaviour. To support her claims, the author draws evidence from an article: Crying Babies- Answering the Call of Infant Cries (Faris and McCarroll, 2010), which summarises research illustrating that “children whose brain experience an increased production of adrenaline will “display increased aggression…at inappropriate times…”…

Somewhere Between Bad and Worse I'm sure you have been somewhere with a screaming kid and thought why are the parents letting their child scream. It comes to question on what makes a good parent? I think most of what makes a good parent a lot has to do with opinion instinct, values and what your beliefs which will change the the upbringing of a kid. I think that there is a lot of standards as a parent that most people can agree with and then there is a grey area that is usually the choice of the parent which will help form the adult that the child turns into.…

After reading the article “The Code of the Streets” by Elijah Anderson I can see how cycle of violence continues to go on in poor inner city communities. Since people pretty much have to defend themselves and their family since the police doesn’t help them. As well as, to really fit among the group they have to create their own self-image and they are told as kids to be tougher. In the article, it states parents are at times the one who make their kids tough because they would punish them if they are not tough. For example if a child if came home upset for losing a fight the parent would tell their kid, “Don’t you com in here crying that somebody beat you up; you better get back out there and whup his ass.…

Air travel is nowhere near comfortable. A message from Dr. Florence Thomson written in response to an article published in The British Medical Journal in 1953 was, “most passengers are quite unable to rest in comfort in the position allowed, and sleep is quite impossible except in very short snatches” (996). In 2016, nothing changed for the better in this regard; CNN recently published an article about the disruptive passengers in flights and incidents of air rage in airplanes (McKirdy). What did change significantly is what comes before boarding the airplane. It has been 15 years since that horrifying day in September 2001.…

The airplane is the safest way to travel; everyone knows this fact. But many people are still scared of flying and are super vigilant during the trip. The shadow of this fear partially comes from the 9/11 attacks, which caused almost 3,000 death and a vast of structures into ruins on September 11, 2001. Four passenger airliners were hijacked by nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists and crashed into buildings as suicide attacks, and the incident made a tremendous fear among the U.S. citizens and the U.S. government. This incident became one of the biggest terrorist attacks in the world, and the recovery of the damages took numerous amounts of human and financial resources of America.…

No one teaches humans how to be parents so what does a child expect from the person they call mom or dad? A child wants to feel loved, they want to feel trust, and they want acceptance and attention. The different parenting styles and the factors have to be taken into consideration such as time, the environment, and the social and psychological aspects as well. There are four different parenting styles according to Diana Baumrind, a well-known psychologist for her research on parenting styles in the 1940s. The four styles are the permissive, authoritarian, authoritative, and uninvolved parenting, based on her studies, from what she formed her Pillar theory.…
