The school leader is to model what he or she expects of teachers and is expected to be the “lead learner in the school” (Cordiero & Cunningham, 2013). They must “develop and supervise the instructional and leadership capacity of school staff” (ELCC 2.3). In order for this to be possible, as the instructional leader of Success Middle School, I must be aware of what good teaching looks like compared to poor teaching and what effective learning looks like and sounds like in any classroom. Therefore, it is essential that as the educational leader I set the expectation that the creation of a respectful environment for both students and adults is non-negotiable and that everyone must take responsibility for fostering this type of organizational climate. …show more content…

Summative teacher evaluation is intended to meet the need for teacher accountability as it measures teachers on their professional responsibilities (Glickman & Gordon, 2013). Formative teacher evaluations are of utmost importance because they are meant to assist and support teachers in professional growth and the improvement of teaching. It is an ongoing method of evaluation usually based on systematic observation. As mentioned above, trust and open communication between the teacher and evaluator impacts the formative evaluation process. With trust, the evaluation will be successfully implemented. Self-evaluation or peer-evaluation is also valuable as it can be used as an ongoing method for teacher development (Glickman & Gordon, 2013). Additionally, through high quality professional development that is differentiated according to teacher need, teacher practice can also be developed. At Success Middle School, we will be utilizing teacher leaders to lead the professional development and asking teachers for input to foster a culture that is built on trust and support. This will also make the evaluation process feel less frightening. Teachers will understand that evaluative methods and accountability systems are in place as supports needed for the organization to thrive and successfully implement change. Overall, this approach will lead Success Middle School towards
