Throughout his book, Thomas C. Foster makes many statements in his various chapters that leave readers with mixed emotions. Because of this, it is challenging to give a solid single response. On one hand, several chapters present ideas that, when tested against previously read literary works, are thought-provoking and provide a successful framework for accurately analyzing literature. On the other hand, Foster makes some claims that are broad generalizations that don’t always hold up to scrutiny. Following are examples of each side, explaining how his theories work and are very helpful and how some are quite far-fetched.…

Anna Porter’s Ghosts of Europe, is far from a typical book one would read within an academic setting. The book explores four countries in an attempt to solidify the unclear identity that is Europe, and expand the notion of a Central Europe. This is a concept based upon a wisp of an idea to create a social and cultural identity. As a testament to Central Europe’s complicated past, Porter goes to great trouble to further develop the complexity of this region’s current presence and to explore the notion that Central Europe will make a future impact in the world. Porter’s writing style is a unique blend of historic fact writing, anecdotes, and personal analyzations of the countries of Poland, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.…

However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…
