Summary: What Is A Compound Archer's Paradox?

The Archers Paradox
What is it?
Have you ever heard the term “Straight as an arrow”? Well, this isn’t exactly accurate. Arrows don’t exactly fly straight, they twist and bend as they fly. When you draw back and release your bowstring the large force of kinetic energy stored in the limbs gets transferred into the arrow and this force causes the spine of the arrow to start bending as it gets pushed forward.
The archer’s paradox is this bending of the arrow around the bow as it is being loosed before it straightens out. At the moment the arrow is loosed from full draw, it will begin to bend in towards the bow and then with a correctly spined arrow it will bend back again to its starting point and continue forward, flexing back and forth as it travels along its path to the target while its fletching and stiffness works to straighten the spine of the arrow.
So what is arrow spine?

If you are shooting with a compound bow then this won’t affect you as much, there is still some flex on the arrow with a compound but this is greatly reduced although an incorrectly spined arrow will still not fly where you want it. Compound archers use a release aid to loose their arrows, traditional and recurve archers use their fingers to loose their arrows. The fingers creates a sideways motion on the string that causes the arrow to bend on release. This motion doesn’t allow the string to move forward in a truly straight line, it moves slightly out to the side. A release aid on the other hand has a lot less contact with the bow string than fingers so it doesn’t affect the forward motion of the string on release as heavily, allowing the sting to move in a completely straight line thus not causing the same heavy bending of the arrow. Recurve shooters to compensate for this using what’s called a plunger or cushion button. This button uses a spring to dampen the bend of the arrow into the bow keeping it straighter on

The Chosen, the novel by Chaim Potok follows the lives of two Jewish boys, Danny Malter and Reuven Saunders, set in Brooklyn, New York, during the time of World War II. A common paradoxical theme found in this novel is that through one’s loss there is also one’s gain. A quote from Reuven’s father, David Malter states this paradox perfectly; “No one knows he is fortunate until he becomes unfortunate” (Potok 87). To me this means you don’t realize what you have until it is gone or taken away from you. There are many examples of this found in the novel and also some examples of this I can relate to my own life.…

The siege of Sarajevo, the longest in the history of modern warfare, began on April 5th 1992 and ended on February 29th 1996. During the four years, the politically motivated Army of Republika Srpska, under the command of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, dropped an average of 377 shells every single day causing damage to over 64% of the buildings and over 100,000 apartments. The Bosnian Serb army also used the hills surrounding Sarajevo to its advantage by placing snipers there who targeted innocent civilians including children, elderly and women. The siege ended in 1996 after the intervention of the United Nations and The NATO, which forced the Bosnian Serb Army to declare ceasefire. However, the once beautifully diverse city of Sarajevo…

It was a very simple weapon, two chords or thongs fastened to a pouch that was a very effective weapon on the battlefield. The sling was the simplest of the missile weapons of antiquity in principle and the most difficult of practice (Military 46). While considerable velocity could be imparted to a practice in this way, the geometry of the scheme dictated that the release be timed with uncanny precision to achieve even rudimentary accuracy (Military 46). By classical times, lead bullets would be launched from the sling. Another important weapon was the axe.…

The grid and group theory is used by Mary Douglas as a tool to go beyond the dichotomy. For Douglas, the priority is to use social life as the basis for understanding how people come to know the world they live in. The ‘grid’ axis refers to the individually oriented aspects of social structure, whilst the ‘group’ axis refers to the strength of group ties. The grid axis thus measures how governed and constricted the individual is. Douglas explores past the dichotomy by considering the effect on the individual - both positive i.e allowing one to act, and negative - being the limitations of one’s actions.…

Emily Dickinson, a woman of the 19th century, was preoccupied with poetry and the power of words. The opening line of the poem My Life had stood- a Loaded Gun is noteworthy for its liberal use of capitalisation. The capitalisation of “My Life” delineates the life of the speaker as the subject of the poem and establishes the poem as autobiographical, positioning the reader the attribute the speaker’s voice to Dickinson both as a woman and as a poet.…
