Summary: What Happened To Buggy

Improved Essays
“What happened to Buggy?” I cried.

In the midst of our crowded apartment sat a tank of Central Park water on my night stand. My brother and I eagerly checked it every night with our magnifying glasses to discover something new: a leech, a mosquito larva, a snail, and so many more organisms.

One night, out of curiosity, I placed Buggy, a saltwater fish my dad had brought home after fishing, into the tank. The next morning, I found Buggy floating on his side with crowds of plankton feeding on his carcass. I lost a friend that day, but the loss also ignited an interest in microbes and their impact on the bigger ecosystem.

As I got older, I was introduced to microbes that directly affected human populations. In the National Youth Leadership

The ocean covers around 70% of the world, contains hundreds of thousands of life forms, and many that have yet to be discovered. Although, we can learn a lot in the classroom environment, there is no better way to understand the marine environment than to physically explore it. The field trip to Virginia Key Beach Park was a great experience. The park is located minutes from downtown Miami and just off the Rickenbacker Causeway. Me being from Texas I had to do some research for the history of the park.…

After completing this project over a period of five weeks, making observations and running tests on the water in the aquatic chamber, a lot could be learned about ecosystems since given the opportunity to observe one up close for five. The water in the aquatic chamber remained clear throughout the first week. The coffee filter in the decomposition lid must have been effective because up until about the fifth contaminants were not evident in the aquatic chamber, and the water remained clear up until that final week. The plants had begun to germinate, and they grew by an inch at the end of the first week. The apples had also begun to decompose, sporting white fuzz by the end of the week.…

The Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Peter Girguis, together with other scientists have found that the gut microbiome of baleen species such as right whales share characteristics with both cows and meat eating predators. Girguis said, “What our paper suggests is the whale foregut is much like a cow’s gut, and we posit that chitin-degrading anaerobic microbial community thrives in there, breaking down the material and making it available to the whale.” Ultimately, the study addresses questions that reach far beyond the guts of whales, which we can call phylogenetic inertia. Girguis hypothesized that a whale’s microbiome would look similar to carnivorous mammals like lions and tiger, additionally, that the foregut was just vestigial.…

Environmental Changes Affecting Organisms The world's climates is being affected by our way of life. Many of these changes aren't just hurting the plants and animals indigenous to these climates, it is also hurting us. Freshwater lakes and ponds, the Arctic ice caps, and humans are being affected by what is going on in the world. Many of the organisms in these freshwater lakes and ponds respond to the changes in their climate in two ways.…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

A prosaic story about my weekend; this weekend I went to the mundane bug jam in at Dade City, Florida, with my sister and my intrepid dad. Before we could even leave, we had to wait over an hour for my aesthetic sister. When we finally got there, the people there were very assiduous. As we toured, we followed a circuitous route around all of the beetles. A lot of of the cars on display were very ostentatious.…

It was a gloomy day. I was at our Subdivision’s Local Beach getting ready to swim out to the raft with my four friends. The “raft” as we called it was the bottom end of a Pontoon Boat anchored in the center of Dollar Lake. Occasionally the rain and winds blew it. When my friends arrived we dove into the shallow end of the beach and acquainted our bodies with the cold, late Summer temperature.…

Mary Ann Moran’s article “The Global Ocean Microbiome” describes the identities of molecular structures exchanged in the microbial functions and vulnerability (1). By studying the microbes in the ocean at all of its different layers, researchers have found many similarities of microbiome evolution in the ocean. There are differences, however, in all the different microbiome, especially in size and shape. They are all linked together, though, through evolution.…

Each article is structured around this idea that metagenomics is able to distinguish how a bacteria has evolved based on its genes. Metagenomics is a mechanism in which microbial species are isolated using their DNA. A few conclusions reached from these experiments are microalgae enhances N & P removal, bacteria contributes to a degrading pathway of benzoate, and bacteria and archaea form ecologically and genetically diverse populations. Overall these discoveries are valuable to the science community and our species because it can lead to the adaptation of overall species structure.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Sea stars, along the Pacific coasts of California (Lopatto, 2014), are inevitably vulnerable to what scientists refer to as the “sea star wasting sickness.” Major ailments like this can hinder an ecosystem’s biological composure, considering the fact that sea stars are keystone species. Should the sea star succumb to such a major disturbance in their population, other species will be negatively impacted as well. Scientists are becoming very analytical as to what exactly is causing the endangerment. Several potential causes for this disease can involve the sea stars’ exposure to different environmental conditions (Venton, 2013) and infectious or virulent agents.…

Discovering a new world below the ocean intrigues me. I have never been one for loving ocean creatures, but I do enjoy learning about the world below us. I found several facts interesting as I read the articles including: how osmosis and salinity functions, how seawater cells move, how pH affects the ocean, how decomposition works in the environment, how upwelling stirs up nutrients, and how water temperature affects organisms. One of the interesting facts discusses why osmosis and salinity impact marine organisms.…

For a long term, the prevailing logic in global microbial diversity has been “everything is everywhere, but nature selects”, coming from Baas Becking’s 1934 publication, “Geobiologie of inleiding tot de milieukunde” (Baas Becking, 1934). This conclusion was based on the presumption that physical, chemical, and geographical barriers play no role in the global dispersal of microbes, which aerosolise for easy distribution. In this scenario, it would be expected that any given species of microbe could be found at any given location, however a microbe’s abundance at a location would vary based on environmental conditions select for or against them. This scenario would also predict global gene flow, and no evolutionary patterns that correlate with…
