“They are called capaill uisce”: Use of Symbolism in The Scorpio Races
On the island of Thisby, in the month of November the Scorpio Races happen. A race to the finish line all you have to do is beat out the rest of the water horses mythical creatures with raging tempers. On one hand there is Sean Kendrick the last winner of the races, but the other is Puck Connolly an interesting young girl who has a normal horse and lives with no parents and her two brothers. The water horses are called capaill uisce. The capaill uisce are used as a symbol to connect between people. The different responses to the symbol show a deeper meaning in the book. They symbolism deeper connects the two main characters in a big way. They also symbolize island and the idea of it and the horses being mystical. They also symbolize the fear the people on the island. Horses as symbols are used as companions, but at the same time the horses in the book are enemies which is the perfect symbol

“I can’t go, they will smell my fear”(Stiefvater 76). The capaill uisce have the ability to smell the fear of the people around them and they feed on it. All the people on Thisby all have a little fear inside of them on the island and the capaill uisce bring that out in them. People react different to their fear. Sometimes it pushes you away from what you fear and sometimes it makes you want to control what you fear.
Symbolism in The Scorpio Races connects many main characters and show ideas in the text. Without the capaill uisce in the text so many important ideas would be missing along with the main concept. The deeper connections between main characters would be lacking. The ideas of fear throughout the book would be missing because there would be nothing to show that the characters were
