Summary: Two Years Are Better Than Four

While there are students who drop out and fail, the majority of students go on to graduate and prove that they have the intellectual potential to succeed. The public seem to think that many students in this millennium do not have the intellectual potential to succeed in college. Many people believe that this generation of students are lazy. This generation is anything but lazy. The students are quite motivated towards their future. The students have the ability to grow and reach new heights. Maybe those students that failed or dropped out had difficulties, but some end up coming back to college and graduating. Those students may not be in the graduating polls, but they mature and finish college.
The older generation believes that college now is vastly different than what they experienced. In “Two Years Are Better Than Four” by Liz Addison, she quotes Rick Perlstein “College as America used to understand it is coming to an end” (255). Owen and Sawhill “Should Everyone go to College” (2013) “Fewer than 60 percent of students who enter four-year schools finish within six years…” (pg. 218). This shows that students are doing their schooling slower than needed. There are various reasons for this. There are some students that are single parents. Other students are working full time and go to school full time. There are many more reasons for taking a slower time than the allotted time. The cost of college is also a factor. Owen and Sawhill state “The more someone has to pay to attend, the lower the net benefit of attending” (Pg. 210). College rates are rising and the income of students are lowering.
