Two Films About Loneliness And How the Internet Can Separate or Bring People Together

By Taylor Pastrick

Set in a somber mood from the beginning, the animated Two Films About Loneliness, offers an odd take on both loneliness and friendship in a digital age. The split screen features Jonathan Smallman (voiced by Tim Key) on the left and Phillip Button (voiced by Detlef Bierstedt) on the right. Smallman is American and does most of the talking throughout the short film, while Button is German and only says a few sentences that one would only understand if they knew German as there are no subtitles on that side of the screen. Button is also a giant hamster, however the reasoning for that never becomes clear. Due to the obvious language barrier, Smallman becomes the main focus for the average American viewer. On both sides, the film opens in dark tones with sad sounding orchestrations playing and an allusion to it raining, the very first thing the viewer hears

Smallman's side of the screen zooms out and shows hims trying to record a spot on a dating website, explaining his opening monologue. However his neighbor keeps making noises that interrupt his recording process. Button's side shows him grabbing a pot, facing the camera and welcoming people, as he is filming a cooking video. As Button continues to film his video with several sound effects, Smallman is shown as increasingly anxious and frustrated as he is unable to record his due to his neighbor. Smallman quickly tries to take advantage of the quiet moments, but he is not fast enough nor is he understanding of what he is doing. Showing his computer screen allows the viewer to see that he is using a free trial and as he tries to pause and restart, the program says that it is not allowed in the trial. Then the opposite screen shows Button accidentally cut his finger and scream. And suddenly Smallman's neighbor is loud

Today I will be discussing Arthur Miller’s 1952 play The Crucible and SmallPoppy’s 2015 YouTube video Instagram Husband and how it displays how although political motivations may be ambiguous, control is the ultimate goal. The motivation Proctor has to bring out the lies and deceit in the town of Salem while also combating his desire to maintain his reputation is similar to the men struggling to fight against their wives obsessed with Instagram while also maintaining their reputations as good husbands. Through a range of different techniques, these two texts also show the conflicting importance of justice and reputation in times of strife.…

I hear the familiar yell of my mother from downstairs as I scramble to fix the bookshelf I had just toppled over. I was twelve at the time, yet my curiosity and boyish desire to explore led me to my failed attempt to reach the fabled attic. It was about ten feet tall to reach the cord that would open the attic, so I devised a scheme to use the bookcase as a stepstool. The feeble bookcase had too narrow of a base to support my wiry 90 pound frame, and shortly after I commenced the climb I found myself on the floor. “WHAT WAS THAT?!”…

One of the most common way the ocean is used to destroy life as an antagonist is in the form of waves. Sometimes realistic, sometimes overly dramatized, waves batter, flip, and destroy the surroundings of protagonists in many films. In Martin Scorsese’s Silence, two men are tied to crucifixes offshore and slowly battered to death by light blue waves. In Castaway, the ocean waves trap the protagonist Chuck Noland on a deserted island on which he fails to escape for three years. In The Poseidon Adventure, a massive tidal wave rocks a cruise ship, serving as the harsh bang that sets the plot into motion.…
