For example, when Jefferson stated that, he was a benevolent slave owner and his slaves loved him. When he made a comment similar to the previous sentence it bothered me the most because the people that were slaves believe that he was a great person had never had a taste of what real freedom was, and they only appreciated him because many of them probably seen worse, but never got the opportunity to see freedom. The asinine comment comes into play when he stated, that he believed he was keeping them safe, protecting them, and ensuring their survival. I believe if he would have let them be free those people would have found their way to the North, learned to mend to their own land from the experience of being slaves, and would have survived on their own. The excuse of trying to protect them and ensure their survival, I believe, what's to ease his own conscience. Another comment that was me that bother me was Jefferson trying to humanize, as much as possible, a dehumanizing situation. No matter what, you cannot humanize a situation that was purposefully built to dehumanize a group of people. I understand that he was seen as benevolent, but those slaves had no control over what happened to them or their families, how to behave, or simply live.
