One day, as Byron came home, his mother pulled off his hood to reveal “...reddish brown, strait, still and slick looking.”(page 87) hair. Byron felt that his natural hair was not cool or attractive, so he decided it would look finer if he dyed and straightened it. He felt that he looked better ‘Mexican - Style’. “Byron, I left Joey. I thought the Wool Pooh had her and instead of fighting him like you did, I left, I ran from him. How come you were brave enough to fight him and all I could do was run! All I could save was a shoe, a stupid ripped up shoe.”(page 201) sobs Kenny when he is in the bathroom with Byron. He got upset at himself for something that was out of his control. After blaming himself for nothing at all, he became depressed and felt worthless. He wasn’t able to wake up and seize the reality. He was the one who led Joey out of the church before it was bombed by terrorists. In the real world, many people become victims of depression when they are not satisfied with their actions. The writer displayed a characters with a lack of self-esteem to stress this obstacle’s occurrence in the real world.
