Bylaw 22.2.1.2(e) of the NCAA Division I Manual requiring every Division I institution to have its rules-compliance program evaluated every four years was rendered null and void when the Athletics Certification Program was discontinued. The Athletics Certification Program has been replaced with the Institutional Performance Program. The Committee on Institutional Performance has recommended the practice of compliance reviews to continue. While in transition, The Office of Auditing and Consulting Services will continue the standard practice of rotating reviews of the different compliance areas to evaluate UTSA’s NCAA Compliance Program.…
Joseph Willis 9/4/15 POL-110 Professor Herman Congressional Ethics Congressman Charles Ranger was one of the most powerful members of congress. That was until in 2010 when he was found guilt of eleven counts of ethics violations. One of the ethics violations that he was convicted of was failing to disclose over $600,000 in assets. He stated that an apartment in New York was being used as his campaign office but in fact he was using it as residential apartment. The issue here is that he did not have to pay rent because it was disclosed as an office.…
Furthermore, a revision of the Honor Code will not only limit cheating and plagiarizing, but it will ultimately prepare students for their future, with the understanding that breaking rules will end in a negative consequence. Students will evidently grow out of this habit and regain morals that will improve their honesty. The students at RVHS should be aware and constantly reminded that cheating and violating school rules will lead them to be rebellious, and dishonest people in the future who don’t value genuine qualities. Such as “[t]he SEAS student is expected to represent himself or herself honestly in all oral or written statements” (Code of Ethics Assignment, 2). This sentence is slightly unclear about what the oral or written statements apply to. This is cleared up when the reader looks at the numbers listed and sees that lying to employers (past or present), fellow students, faculty members, or administration is not tolerated when done face to face or by documents. The conflict regarding the utilization of the honor code can be seen throughout the school system, ranging from even elementary, to the college level. With students feeling increased pressure to succeed and little obligation to turn in their peers, honor codes have fallen out of step with values of the modern college student. Codes such as these are in place to keep young students honest and hardworking. In the recent years these codes have been violated significantly. Plagiarism, cheating and academic dishonesty are some of the many topics discussed within Pace University’s Academic Integrity Code. The main purpose of this code is to create awareness on proper academic misconduct, deter plagiarism and to create procedures on how to handle misconduct. If a student is suspected of academic dishonesty, they will meet with the Committee Chair, where there is a possibility of resolving the issue amongst the student and complainant. One of the arguments that Robbins presents in Chapter 5 is that the increase in the competitiveness of the college application process results in many applicants embellishing or lying on their applications so they have a better chance of being accepted. Robbins cites that the dean of admissions of Grinnell College caught two athletes lying about being recruited by other schools on their application (Robbins 135). With this piece of data, the author makes the assumption that this example is representative of all colleges. I agree with the author’s claim that the competitiveness of the applications process will result in more people cheating, but I do not think the author’s warrant is valid. At the Naval Academy, the Honor Concept is good always and everywhere. The Academy is a microcosm of the larger world; however, this microcosm shields us from many greater evils that exist, even if only in rare, exceptional cases, in the real world. I cannot think of a situation at the Academy in which lying, cheating, or stealing would be permissible. In my opinion, lying, cheating, and stealing are only acceptable in life or death situations. Certainly, many of us will break this at one point for a much smaller reason, such as helping a friend or trying to evade punishment, but those actions are failures in tests of integrity.…
BUZZY--UNC PRESENTATION— What we have begun to learn within all of these scandals is that big schools find loopholes for their student-athletes to boost their academics instead of these student-athletes fulfilling their academic requirements on their own. Regardless of what sport you play there are ways around going to class and getting good marks, so that you can focus more of your time towards the athletic side of your student athlete life. The University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill has been under investigation for certain scandals dating back to the early '90s. I firmly believe that I did not violate the Honor Code and am writing this statement to express my defense over these claims made against me. I take my education and future very seriously and would never jeopardize it. As I am a senior, I am currently applying to many well-known colleges and universities, and would never want to imperil my admissions chances over a homework assignment. Academic integrity is a crucial aspect of being a student, and it becomes even more crucial to a person who participates in college athletics. Being caught with academic dishonesty, or cheating, reflects poorly not only on the individual, but also on the team and the university the student is representing. NCAA Ethics and Compliance Program In 1906, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was established in order to protect both student athletes and the integrity of college sports (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2015). Since its establishment, the NCAA has worked with colleges in an effort to inoculate strong ethical standards for student athlete programs. In recent studies, it has been projected that around 70% of college students violate their university’s honor code. Some may find these statistics to be surprising and alarming, but I am not one of those people. I think that these statistics can eye opening to many people, those people who have lacked exposure to a very competitive environment, however as someone who was exposed and participated in that competitive environment, I have experienced violations of the honor code many times over.
