According to, The Technological Surprise by, Raymond Aron, the French Revolution was a critical factor that led to World War I. Aron states that a smaller disagreement, could lead to a large battle "wars tend to naturally expand into total wars" (79). After the Franco-Prussian war, most European countries starting with France, "reintroduced compulsory military service" (79), these countries began to develop a democratic and Socialist government.
