Summary: The SIOP Model

The SIOP model is organized around three major categories: teacher preparation, teacher instruction, and assessment. Preparation includes being sure your objectives are clear and meaningful. Instruction includes considering students’ background knowledge, using appropriate language during your instruction, giving students many opportunities to use the strategies you are teaching, providing students with a variety of ways to interact with the concepts you are teaching, and ensuring that students are engaged. Assessment focuses on review of concepts taught with regular feedback to your students.
