Between 1909-1913, a number of unionized workers grew to a quarter of a million (Von Drehle 172). Thirty-five hundred thousand people were involved in the funeral march for the Triangle Workers, one of the largest sorrows in New York's history. A new series of laws emerged in 1913, the Tammany Twins pushed twenty-five bills through congress addressing labor laws in the United States. Automatic Sprinklers had to be installed in high-rise buildings, fire drills needed to be conducted in large shops, and doors had to be unlocked and swing outward. Laws enforced protection for women and children and denied manufacturing by poor families living in tenements. In 1908, the Supreme court ruled in the case of Muller vs Oregon ten hour work days for women (Hewitt 196). The fifty-fourth-hour bill was passed lowering working hours of citizens to only 54 hours a week permitted.
