The Party controls Oceania. They have created a society where everyone is conscious of being watched in their day to day lives by “telescreens”, technology, which allows the Party to spy on your actions and statements. Making sure no one makes an offence against the Party. Unfortunately for the citizens of Oceania, they rely heavily on the Party’s leadership without thoughts of their own. All the religions that opposed the beliefs of the Party have been wiped out of existence, have been replaced with the principles of “Ingsoc”, the political system of the Party, which denies people the access to the past and forces them to rely on what the Party says. A method stated as “doublethink” in Newspeak and reality control in Oldspeak, which are …show more content…
Ingsoc overpowers the beliefs that would contradict and say otherwise of its statements. Without any opposing views, The citizens have nothing to trust, but the Party; allowing the Party to keep a strong hold of power. The statements included in Ingsoc encourages individuals of Oceania interpret that the Party as the best and Eurasia as well as Eastasia as evil. An example would be the “proletarians”, low class citizens that are under the Party’s control; brainwashed by Ingsoc to follow the Party’s every command. Also due to Ingsoc, the citizens of Oceania are very patriotic. The proles do not know very much about the war. When they are told that one group of people are enemies, they rage against the group of people. When the proles are told another group of people are their allies, they cheer and praise the Party. Such as the moment when the Party changes enemies from Eurasia to Eastasia and everyone suddenly starts to rage at Eastasia (p. 188-189). They proles did not need an explanation of the change. This act represents how strong the Party’s control is, having already taken control of the citizens minds, as if the Party and the individuals of Oceania are one …show more content…
The reason why the proles do not know very much about Oceania. The Party has changing the reality of war multiple times, that the proles have lost track of the happenings of war. Especially because of the Ministry of Truth constantly bending the past to the Party’s likings. All citizens, in including Party members, who know about the history and the changes occuring in the war, do not know about the changes. A paradox made possible by “doublethink”, another factor of Ingsoc which forces Party members proles to hold two contradicting beliefs on the same topic at the same time with equal value. Doublethink helps the Oceanian government prevent individuals of Oceania from understanding the reality in which everyone lives in. The major factor of why the proles do not revolt against the Party. An example would be the citizens of Oceania thinking the Party is working for the better quality of life of the lower class, but in reality the proles also hold the belief that the Party is just another oligarchy ruling them (p. 188-189 inference). Doublethink contributes to the overall control of the Party, having no one capable of comprehending the truth, except those that lead the Party. Known as the “Inner Party members”. Even though Inner Party members are capable of understanding the true existence of the Party, they also practice doublethink regularly (p.

In 1984, by George Orwell, the party got into power by killing the part of Oceana’s population that didn’t approve of the party. This is not a special strategy in itself, it has been attempted in places like World War 2 in Germany. However, Hitler’s deception is nothing compared to the tricks the party uses to make sure that nobody fights them to get their freedom back. The party is able to get away with killing so many people to stay in power because of a few different reasons. The first is that they reward citizens who report other citizens for doubting the party.…

The Party wants to eliminate thoughtcrime, which is having unorthodox thoughts. Newspeak replaces standard English and it enables the citizens from thinking negatively about the Party. This makes “thoughtcrime literally impossible” as the range of thought gets smaller which is the “aim” of the Party. The citizens of Oceania will not be able to speak badly about Big Brother if there are no words in which to convey negative thoughts about him. Newspeak as a language is limiting, furthermore controlling the citizens as they are only able to express what the Party believes acceptable to express.…

The Party aims to control the minds of the people, starting with the control of their language. Orwell writes, “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it” (Orwell 52).
