Eleanor Buchanan investigates Australia’s perceptions of Islam and how Muslim discrimination is at an all-time high.
1 in 4 Australians were born overseas, this means that we have one of the most diverse populations in the world. Yet, cultural and religious discrimination are prevalent issues facing Australia right now. People of the Islamic religion are experiencing discrimination daily in Australia. Western Sydney University recently completed a survey of almost 600 Australian Muslims. The results found that 57% had experienced racism, that is more than 1 in 2. Why is it that we are a nation of hate and not one of acceptance?
Many people of the Islamic background find it hard to be themselves and feel comfortable within Australian society. Susie Latham is the co-founder of Voices Against Bigotry, an organisation which aims to build a network of people who have an opposing voice to anti-Muslim behaviours in Australia. In one of her recent articles published in the Sydney Morning Herald she shared that she no longer felt safe saying her sons name out load in a public place due to fear of being discriminated against. An Australian study into racism and the social exclusion of Arabs and Muslims found that two thirds of participants had personally experienced increased racism since 11 September 2001. Terrorism is intended to cause fear amongst the general population, these people manipulate our views of Islam and make us contradict our feelings about Muslims. Extremist do not represent the Islamic community, they are distorting and hijacking the religion. Their views are repulsive and their actions inconceivable. Terrorists provide threats to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, it is something everyone must fight against
