“There is a global reduction of blood flow in marijuana user’s brains, and the hippocampus is the most impacted region due to its role in memory” (Robinson). When tested, pot smokers showed low blood flow in the hippocampus, which is crucial for storing long-term memories, including all past experiences. This lack of blood in the hippocampus could lead to early onset Alzheimer’s or even cause memory impairment. Half of all drug related seizures that are reported are due to cannabis consumption. There is a significant difference between medical marijuana and the kinds of marijuana that many people seem desperate to legalize. Marijuana, unlike cocaine or heroin, can actually be medically beneficial. It is a natural herb which can help people who are trying to deal with chronic pain and sickness. While it is not going to cure cancer, it is very helpful when it comes to cancer patients dealing with their pain and discomfort. I personally do not have anything against the legalization of medical marijuana because it is truly beneficial to people who are actually in need of it and its healing abilities. However, I believe that if medical marijuana is legalized, the recreational use does not need to be because those people are just chasing after a better “high” and not using it for medicinal purposes in any way, shape, or form. After all, if you have a serious medical problem, it should not be too hard to get a medical marijuana card and use it legally. We as people need to educate not only ourselves, but others as well, on how marijuana can be affecting us negatively. Further investigation within this topic is encouraged. With every state and country that chooses to legalize or decriminalize marijuana, comes more and more buyers and consumers. This is only leading to increased substance abuse as well as a greater risk of seeing major health problems
