In addition to analysing the handwriting on the ransom note, forensic document examiners can also analyse the characteristics of both the paper and writing tool used to construct the note. Paper can be identified by what it is made of, paper or cotton are the common sources (James, Nordby, & Bell, 2014, p. 468). There are also variations that can be seen in sizing, fillers, and coating that are added during paper production (James, Nordby, & Bell, 2014, p. 468). Companies all use different chemicals in their manufacturing process to make their product unique from others. The shading and colour can vary between products from companies, as well as the texture, and therefore, we can use these characteristics to narrow down a source of origin (James, Nordby, & Bell, 2014, p. 469). These characteristics do not limit evidence to a very narrow domain, but that is why they are called class characteristics. Class characteristics are defined as a unique feature on an item that belongs to a group of items (James, Nordby, & Bell, 2014, p. 566). While these are important to the initial classification of evidence they cannot point to an individual source of evidence. Individual characteristics are what make matching a piece of evidence to a source more possible. …show more content…
A detective lost track of John Ramsey for over an hour in which time he would have plenty of time to roam around and potentially alter, or contaminate important forensic evidence (Thomas, & Davis, 2011, p. 28). Additionally, when John Ramsey found the body he removed her from the basement, carried her upstairs, covered her in a blanket, caressed her hair and held her (Thomas, & Davis, 2011, p. 30, 31). All of these actions were very damaging to the forensic aspect of the investigation. The note, however, is still full of telling

As he walks through the hallways of the house he notices, “large hard chairs… They didn't look as if anybody had ever sat in them.” The detective clearly notices the little things and is clearly experienced when surveying the scene. He surveys the scene for two reasons one, he feels a vibe of insecurity in the household and two, he wants to rid himself of that idea of judgment that he believes is being laid upon him. Along with the chair imprint he also notices the, “young chauffeur in shiny black leggings dusting a maroon Packard convertible.”…

There was a possibility that she could have seen John Ramsey's pay for $180,000 as a holiday bonus. Being the housekeeper she was familiar with both the home and the family's schedule, Hoffman-Pugh makes a suitable suspect, and without an alibi. She was asleep in bed while her husband allegedly slept on the couch.…

The reason this evidence was so crucial was because before this, the authorities believed the murder to be a carjacking gone wrong, the letter just proved that the Zodiac Killer had ties to this murder as well. The biology unit took this shirt and easily compared it to the DNA of the body they found to determine if the blood on the shirt matches the victim. If authentic, the fingerprints would be some of the most useful evidence in trying to determine if a suspect was guilty, but the Zodiac was always cautious and made it an effort never to leave behind any evidence and he also made claims that he planted evidence. However, an eyewitness claims to be able to testify and authenticate the fingerprints. If that is the case, then the fingerprinting unit can compare the prints to a suspect and…

Contextual information unknowingly affects how opinions and perceptions are made; because it is human nature to associate information with future perceptions, as a way to achieve a sense of security and predictability (Houck & Siegel, 2015). According to Dror et al (2006), contextual information is defined as, information that provides an understanding of the context of an event or issue. In forensic investigations, contextual information affects most areas of forensic science, from blood pattern analysis, to crime scene management; however, contextual information can produce a number of different outcomes with the exact same evidence (Houck & Siegel, 2015). According to Bernstein et al (2013), contextual information can lead to the complete…
