Aside from the World Cup, soccer still attracts millions of views each day in European and South American countries. However, in the recent years’ soccer has been on the rise. Sports such as football and hockey have a tremendous amount of physical contact within a short span of time, in soccer they have brief moments of violence throughout the entire course of the game. Penalizations in games such football and hockey are on a different spectrum compared to soccer. Football and hockey have negative penalties which benefit the other team and discourage this behavior. However, in soccer a violation of the rules does not benefit the opposing team, only warns the player by simply giving him a yellow card. A red card would be beneficial to the other team since a player would be sent off the field without any substitutions allowed. The low scoring opportunities and difficulty of score continues to drive the audience farther away. Americans loves high scoring games, football games which have roughly 36 plus points on the board is typically an exciting game, whereas in soccer many games end in ties or a win by one or two goals. Soccer games are slow paced except for a few games such as the 2014 World Cup Semifinals, Brazil vs Germany, where Germany was annihilated with a final score of 7-1 (the percentage of games like these are extremely low). Soccer is a defensive sport, building your way up from the back is the game strategy, whereas in football driving through your offensive line is seen a great play. The audience here strongly oppose games ending in ties or shootouts. They do not understand whether it is fair for a winner to be decided on a shootout, after both teams have battled extremely hard through regular and overtime. Shootouts are usually about luck and less of skill, you hope that you place the ball in the correct corner and the goalkeeper does not stop

With more than 240 million people who regularly play it, the sport has grown to be the most popular in the world (FIFA). What no one acknowledges after all, is the dark side of football, which includes homophobia, corruption, and most commonly racism.
