Along with psychological purposes, music can alter the human body. Elena Mannes, author of The Power of Music said, “Scientists have found that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function,” which is why she believes that music can assist with symptoms of numerous clinical situations (Mannes). She believes that since music connects, it can change the way the body performs. She continues to explain how although music styles change, music was present in very earliest of mankind. For some reason, I only associated it with the elderly, probably because someone came to my grandfather’s room on St. Patrick’s Day to sing him songs. He was in barbershop, so music was clearly an immense influence on his life. I was not there to witness the singing, but before the therapist, he was bedridden and depressed. My mom said that whenever the student came in with a guitar and asked if he’d like to sing, my grandpa actively participated and was an entirely different person the rest of the day.
