Most of the big cities are located within the valleys of Utah. We can truly enjoy the beauty of the mountains that we are surrounded by if you live anywhere in Utah. But this great advantage comes with a great downfall. In the valleys during winter we have to go through an environment change called inversion. Inversion is where cold air and the warm air changes the place of each other, where the cold air in on the bottom. Due to this change the pollution and the cold air gets trapped within the valley with nowhere to escape. Just in 2013, major cities in Utah were in top 20 for worst air pollution in the world (air, 2013). With this information alone we can see that there is a definite problem. Most people probably don’t think about it much because they think that is of the past, but the winter is coming, and what can we do to reduce or prevent the pollution? Many of the students at Brigham Young University are from different states and probably won’t care much about the air we have in Utah, but it is time to take responsibility. Those students will still live in Utah for four years and they can be affected in the bad air. I appreciate the time that everyone took to read this.
